Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has criticised the PN’s proposal to create a Population Authority, arguing that the idea raises serious political and ideological questions. In a Facebook post, Muscat said the responsibilities being proposed already exist within entities like Identity Malta, the NSO and Jobsplus, questioning why another authority would be needed at all.He also mocked the proposal as contradictory, saying the PN had promised to reduce bureaucracy while now proposing a new authority.Muscat then drew comparisons to historical population control structures, referencing policies introduced during Mussolini’s Italy as well as China’s former population planning commission. He also challenged the PN to clearly explain what its position on foreign workers actually means in practice.Among the questions he raised were how many foreign workers the PN believes should leave Malta, which industries would be affected by labour shortages and whether quotas would be introduced. The PN has recently spoken about the need to address overpopulation concerns and demographic growth in Malta. What do you think about the PN’s proposal?•
