An 85-year-old Oregon man has been hailed a hero after intervening in an attempted assault on a woman. The unnamed hero heard the victim screaming for help after she had allegedly been incapacitated by Matthew Hokulii Aranda with a taser. Video of Aranda’s arrest was shared on Facebook by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and it shows officers detaining the man who was hiding in a bush. Aranda has since been indicted on 10 charges which include attempted kidnapping, assault and unlawful use of a weapon as per PEOPLE. According to the police statement, on May 8th Aranda, 42, posed as a utility worker in an attempt to kidnap and assault a 25-year-old woman who was working as a caregiver at a trailer park in the Medford area. He stalked his victim and waited several hours to strike, using a taser to incapacitate the woman and physically assault her. Had nobody else been around the woman could have lost her life. A Good Samaritan stops Aranda’s attack Luckily an 85-year-old resident from the trailer park heard the cries of the victim and intervened. The elderly man confronted Aranda who proceeded to tase him too, however, the distraction provided the victim an opportunity to escape. The woman was able to get away from Aranda and run to her vehicle. The 42-year-old chased her with a large hunting knife although she was thankfully able to get to her car before he could catch up. The condition of the old man and female victim is not known but Aranda did injure himself when he jumped on the hood of the victim’s moving car. The alleged attacker fell off of the vehicle in the process of attempting to stop her escape. Officers at the scene later found him hiding in a bush and he was arrested without further incident. Thankfully Aranda’s alleged kidnapping attempt failed and it was thanks in large part to the elderly “Good Samaritan” who stepped in. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office commended the 85-year-old, and commenters on Facebook labeled him a “hero” for his efforts. The would-be kidnapper is reportedly a registered sex offender. He was convicted in 2016 on a number of charges including delivering controlled substances to a minor, stalking, and using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct so this latest alleged attack isn’t exactly out of character for Aranda. Matthew Hokulii Aranda was sentenced to six years prison time after allegedly having a relationship with a 16-year-old girl when he was 32. The other charges of first-degree rape, sexual abuse, encouraging child sexual abuse and coercion were dropped as part of a plea deal that was made at the time as per kbtx.com. The case is still currently under investigation.
