The world came together this week to wish beloved English broadcaster Sir David Attenborough a happy 100th birthday… but did you know that he spent his 60th birthday month filming in Malta?Back in May 1986, the legend himself had come down to the islands to film scenes for a four-part miniseries aptly called The First Eden: The Mediterranean World and Man, which would go on to air one year later. In photos shared on Facebook this week by Gregory Camenzuli, Attenborough can be seen in front of Gozo’s Azure Window (just for that extra dose of nostalgia). In a short clip shared by Filmed In Malta, meanwhile, scenes from the series’ first and third episodes also feature Għar Dalam and Dwejra’s Fungus Rock, where Attenborough talked about Malta’s prehistoric dwarf animal breeds and the islands’ unique flora.“Prior to leaving the island, Attenborough praised the beauty of these islands and the hospitality of their people,” Filmed in Malta recounted. “He described the south of Malta and Gozo as ‘among the most beautiful in the world’.” During that visit 40 years ago, then-Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Alex Sciberras Trigona had presented the natural historian and conservationist with a copy of the book Birds of the Maltese Archipelago by D.A Bannerman and J.A Vella-Gaffiero.So many decades later, Sir David Attenborough remains one of the most universally loved broadcasters ever, and the only person to win BAFTAs across all major broadcasting generations.Did you know about this Maltese side quest in Attenborough’s long and storied life?
