Party Animals dev is now backtracking after getting eviscerated for hosting $75,000 AI video contest

Wait 5 sec.

How do you ruin the vibe around playing as cute, fluffy animals beating each other up with your friends? AI slop, of course!Party Animals developer Recreate Games posted yesterday that it was hosting an "AI Video Contest" where fans could submit AI-generated videos for a chance at $75,000 in cash prizes. To no one's surprise, the community hated it. And now, they're backtracking.https://twitter.com/party_animals/status/2054417230428074225The Twitter/X post announcing the news has one of the most shocking engagement ratios I have ever seen: 3,400 replies and 2,200 reposts to just around 500 likes. Needless to say, that is quite bad, and the devs were forced to address it today."We’d like to address the recent discussion around the AI video contest, and first of all, we’re sorry for upsetting players with this event," the studio said in a social media post today. "We’re also sorry that we didn’t communicate with everyone clearly enough before the event started. Our original goal was to lower the barrier to creation. In past contests, we saw players with great ideas and scripts who couldn’t fully bring them to life because they weren’t familiar with tools like editing, modeling, or animation software. We hoped AI could be a more accessible tool that lets more people take part."The replies on the original post were also overwhelmingly negative, with fans calling out the questionable decision and asking the team to reconsider. Thankfully, it has, but not after a lot of damage has been done. In response, the game is now being flooded with negative reviews on Steam, with the recent reviews listed at Mostly Negative while the all-time reviews say Mostly Positive."We are not trying to dismiss handmade work or disrespect creators," the statement continued. "To us, AI is just another tool. What we truly care about is the idea, the expression, and the final work."The studio has now posted a poll where players can vote on what to do with the contest, with the overwhelming majority choosing to cancel it altogether in the first hour of it being live. With $75,000 up for grabs, let's hope that an actual art contest will decide some potentially life-changing money instead of putting a prompt into an AI.The post Party Animals dev is now backtracking after getting eviscerated for hosting $75,000 AI video contest appeared first on Destructoid.
