Change of Character & Break of StructureXAG/USD SpotFX:XAGUSDTrading_Stream Market structure is just the sequence of highs and lows price prints over time.. HH-HL-HH-HL means uptrend, LH-LL-LH-LL means downtrend. Simple, but how the trend ends is where most traders get caught, they call the top too early or they hold too long. Knowing the two stages — ChoCh(Change of character) and BOS(Break of structure) — is what stops you from making either mistake The Change of Character is the first break. When an uptrend that has been printing HH-HL suddenly fails to make a new HL and breaks below the most recent one(usually a minor swing HL), thats your early warning. The trend isnt dead yet but the buyers couldnt hold the line. Treat it as warning, not entry. The Break of Structure is the second break. When price then takes out the next HL down(usually more significant swing) — the one before the one that just broke — thats the confirmation. The old uptrend is technically over and a new downtrend is now in motion. ChoCh = first violation of the most recent HL(or LH in a downtrend) — early warning, dont front-run it. BOS = subsequent violation of the next structure point — full confirmation, this is your trigger If price breaks the ChoCh level but recovers before reaching the BOS level, the trend probably isnt done, that was just a deep pullback. Note: the difference between ChoCh and BOS isnt about how violently price breaks the level... its about which level breaks. The first HL break is usually ChoCh , specially if its a minor swing. The next one is always BOS. EXAMPLE ON CHART: Silver on the 1H printed a clean uptrend — HH 87.117, HL 82.890, HH 87.636, HL 85.459, then a final HH at 89.216. Five structure points all pointing higher. The orange line marks the ChoCh — price dropped from 89.216 and broke through 85.459 without bouncing. Thats when the trend got flagged as in trouble, but not dead yet. The red line marks the BOS — price then took out 82.890, the previous major HL. Thats when the trend was officially over and the new downtrend started. From there silver kept selling all the way down to 75.85 where we are now. If you waited for the orange break(ChoCh) you were too early. If you waited for the red break(BOS) you caught the cleanest part of the move. And if you didnt know the difference you were probably long the whole way down. The above are my own personal observations and conclusions.
