Former Labour MEP Cyrus Engerer has criticised both Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition Leader Alex Borg after both agreed Malta should not build more mosques beyond the existing one in Paola. In a Facebook post, Engerer pointed out that Malta’s political leaders often struggle to agree on issues like overdevelopment, ODZ land and construction but are “aligned within seconds” when it came to blocking another mosque.Engerer argued that politicians in a democracy should not decide which religions are allowed places of worship, calling freedom of worship a “basic human right”.Although saying he is not personally religious, he stressed that rights should not depend on which faith someone follows. He also warned that forcing religious communities into unofficial spaces rather than regulated places of worship could create greater social risks and division.“The real threat to Malta is not people congregating to pray,” he wrote, accusing politicians of using religion to distract from other national issues. What do you make of Engerer’s comments?•
