Sam Coffey’s first season with WSL champions Manchester City has come to a premature ending. Coffey will miss the Citizens final two matches after undergoing minor knee surgery this past week, the club announced Friday. The U.S. women’s national team midfielder will begin rehabilitation with Man City’s medical team in hopes of being ready for the start of the 2026-27 campaign. “Everyone at City would like to wish Sam the very best in her recovery and looks forward to seeing her back out on the pitch soon,” a club statement read. Coffey, 27, joined the Citizens in January from NWSL side Portland Thorns and made an immediate impact with the club. The veteran midfielder made 10 appearances in all competitions, starting in five of eight league matches. Andree Jaglertz’s squad most recently clinched a first WSL title in 10 years, while also sealing a berth into the 2026-27 UEFA Women’s Champions League tournament. The Citizens will conclude their league schedule on Saturday against West Ham United before facing off with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Women’s FA Cup Final on May 31 at Wembley Stadium, a match that Coffey is now ruled out of. Coffey’s surgery looks likely to rule her out of USWNT duty this June as Emma Hayes’ squad takes on Brazil in a pair of road friendlies. She’s earned 46 caps for the USWNT since making her debut back in June 2022.
