The MP5 has been in service for 60 years, and nobody has managed to retire it. Many police and military agencies around the world still run it in some capacity and it’s a cultural icon. Zenith Firearms makes one of the American-built civilian options in the ZF-5, and I picked one up with my own money. I had it Form 1'd as an SBR before it ever saw a range. Shooting it as a pistol was never the plan.Reviewing an MP5 clone without constantly referencing the MP5 is really tough. ZF-5 and MP5 are going to be used interchangeably throughout this piece. That's nothing against Zenith. It's just the nature of the platform.Zenith Firearms Coverage on TheFirearmBlog: [SHOT 2026] New Zenith Firearms ZF-9 and ZF-10 MRDS PDW Pistols Zenith Announces MRDS PDW Family [SHOT 2024] Zenith Firearms Displays ZF-56 Roller Delayed 5.56 The Zenith ZF-56 – The Unholy Lovechild Of AR & HK33 Zenith Firearms Cuts Ties with MKE – New Product Launch in 2021 Specifications: Zenith Firearms ZF-5The ZF-5 Essentials Package includes the pistol, one 30-round steel magazine, a soft carry case, and a user manual. You're getting an American-made roller-delayed 9mm with a cold hammer forged barrel, a 3-lug mount, and a limited lifetime warranty. If you know the platform and what alternatives cost, that number makes sense. If you're coming in fresh, it might sting.“The ZF-5 retains the iconic sub gun profile of the original HK MP5 submachine gun, but offers numerous improvements to the system through modernization, precise tolerances, improved coatings, and a cold hammer forged CMV barrel. The American Made ZF-5 is a semi-automatic, full-size close quarters pistol that pairs the versatile 9mm cartridge with a performance maximizing barrel length, sight radius, and tropical wide forearm. While the ZF-5 is a perfect base for short-barreled-rifle conversions, it is also a highly effective pistol that affords iron-sight accuracy at distances exceeding 100 meters. The platform is also compatible with picatinny rail mount adapters that make it easier to accessorize with red dots and other attachments. This American-made MP5-style platform is covered by a limited lifetime warranty, and ships in a high-quality soft carry case with (1) 30 round magazine, and a user manual.” First Look: Zenith Firearms ZF-5Out of the soft case, the ZF-5 looks exactly like an MP5. The finish is clean and uniform throughout. Tolerances feel tight. I've handled the real article enough times to say I wouldn't call this a step down. That's not faint praise. The case fits the gun perfectly. No wasted space. I'd like to see external magazine pouches on the outside because it would naturally push you toward picking up a couple more mags. Not a complaint, just a missed opportunity. The barrel is cold hammer forged 4150 CMV, 3-lug, and threaded 1/2x28. Running a suppressor was always part of the plan, so the 3-lug interface mattered. Swapping a Dead Air Wolfman on and off takes seconds. For the stock, I went with an MKE MP5 buttstock that I picked up from Atlantic Firearms when it was on sale. The MKE stock fits MP5-pattern guns, and the price is right compared to tracking down genuine HK furniture. Fair warning: that stock is a fight to install every single time. Measuring overall length before the Form 1 went in, fight. Tax stamp day, fight. It goes on, and it functions fine, but budget some patience. The sights are the standard MP5 setup: fixed hooded post up front and a 4-aperture rotary drum in the rear. Selecting your aperture is done by hand. Just spin the drum to where you want it. The sight tool that is sold separately ( elsewhere, Zenith does not sell one from what I see) is for actual windage and elevation adjustment, not for switching apertures. Worth knowing because people see "requires a tool" and assume the sights are a daily chore. They're not. Changing the aperture takes a second. Dialing in your zero with the sight tool is a different thing entirely. The ZF-5 ships as a pistol, and Zenith markets it that way. I didn't test it that way, and I won't pretend otherwise. The manual of arms on this platform is built around having something to pull into your shoulder: no bolt hold open, a charging handle that needs real input, a paddle magazine release that takes a session or two to get natural. All of that makes more sense with a stock behind it. I'm not trying to tell any gun guy how to properly gun guy. Do what you want. I Form 1'd mine before firing a round. Range Time: Zenith Firearms ZF-5I ran about 200 rounds through the ZF-5 on the first outing, split between roughly 150 supersonic and 50 subsonic. The supers were 115-grain Remington brass-cased range ammo. The subs were 151-grain Barnaul steel-cased.Accuracy genuinely surprised me. The rotary drum peep setup looks like it would be a limiting factor, but it isn't. I was shooting at a rubber gong hanging from a rubber strap and clipped the strap clean off. The gong just fell. A 13.4-inch sight radius buys you more than you'd expect on a gun this size. The trigger is the weakest point. It's heavy and creepy with a couple of stutters before it breaks. Not quite a clean two-stage, more like two and a half. The reset is a loud plastic clunk. I've shot worse, but it's not a high point. The aftermarket for MP5-pattern trigger groups is well established if you want to address it. I'm not going to hold a 1960s HK design decision against Zenith. Running the Dead Air Wolfman via the 3-lug mount and feeding it those 151-grain Barnaul subsonics is, without any reservation, the most fun I've had shooting a 9mm suppressed sub-gun. Gassiness with the can on rates about a 6 out of 10 from me. Noticeable, could taste it, but nowhere near the worst I've experienced with a suppressed roller-delayed gun. It's manageable. Without the suppressor the ZF-5 is just a pleasant gun to shoot. The 115-grain Remington ran through without issue and the roller-delayed recoil impulse is about as soft as it gets for a blowback-operated 9mm. Nothing dramatic happens. Final Thoughts: Zenith Firearms ZF-5Critiquing the ZF-5's design in any serious way feels misplaced because Zenith is faithfully building what HK developed decades ago. The design decisions that might give modern shooters pause are original equipment: no bolt hold open, the proprietary sight adjustment tool for zeroing, and the paddle mag release. The MP5 is still deployed by professionals worldwide. The platform earned that reputation before most of us were born. The ZF-5 deserves its own recognition. Zenith cold hammer forged that barrel domestically and backs the gun with a limited lifetime warranty. Calling it an MP5 clone is accurate shorthand, but it undersells what Zenith is actually doing. As an SBR with a good stock and a suppressor, it's outstanding. As a pistol, yours truly has no interest. That's a personal call and yours may differ. The folks at Zenith have been great both times I've crossed paths with them at SHOT. If they ever want to set the ZF-5P down next to its bigger brother for a proper look, I'd be more than happy to make that happen. Zenith didn't send this one for review. I bought it with my own money, and I'd do it again. The sticker might be a lot for some folks, and I get that. Hopefully, you can find it at a decent street price. Do you guys and gals own or want to own an MP5-pattern firearm? Would you go the SBR route or stick with the pistol configuration? And for those who've had the chance to run one suppressed with subsonic ammo, does it live up to the reputation? Let us know in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
