Misraħ il-Karmelitani Garden in Żurrieq was officially inaugurated by Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Minister Miriam Dalli together with the Project Green team and Żurrieq Mayor Rita Grima. The new open space, covering around 1,150 square metres, has transformed a site previously covered in tarmac into an accessible green area within a residential neighbourhood. As part of the project, a rainwater reservoir was excavated to collect runoff from nearby roads, with the water set to be used for the irrigation of indigenous trees and shrubs planted throughout the garden. The site also includes solar-powered lighting, benches and additional amenities aimed at creating a recreational space for residents and families.A traditional Maltese luzzu once belonging to the late Gianni “il-Lixxu” Tonna was also installed in the garden after being restored and donated to the Local Council in his memory. The installation was coordinated by the Mayor together with Joseph Farrugia, known as “it-Timba”, who assisted with the transport and preparation of the boat.In total, the project included the planting of 40 mature trees and 1,620 shrubs to improve biodiversity and enhance the surrounding environment.
