The earthquake hit early morning on Thursday, May 21st, 2026, at 5:50 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake as well. A third agency, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Quarto (pop. 37,700) located 1 km from the epicenter, Pianura (pop. 57,800) 3 km away, Pozzuoli (pop. 81,200) 5 km away, Soccavo (pop. 45,300) 5 km away, Marano di Napoli (pop. 49,900) 5 km away, Fuorigrotta (pop. 76,500) 6 km away, Giugliano in Campania (pop. 80,300) 9 km away, Naples (pop. 909,000) 11 km away, and Casoria (pop. 73,900) 14 km away.Update Thu, 21 May 2026, 03:53Seismic-like event, possible earthquake, reported few minutes ago near Naples, Campania, ItalyUnconfirmed quake or seismic-like event reported: 18 km west of Naples, Napoli, Campania, Italy, 3 minutes agoWe are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking possibly caused by seismic activity in or near Naples, Campania, Italy on 21 May 2026 (GMT) at approximately 03:49 GMT.There are no details yet on the magnitude or depth of this possible quake. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt1172–172 km (107–107 mi)172 km (107 mi)II: Very weak shaking44.4–25 km (2.7–15.3 mi)11.2 km (7 mi)III: Weak shaking58.3–11.3 km (5.2–7 mi)9.9 km (6.1 mi)IV: Light shaking143.4–14.9 km (2.1–9.3 mi)7.2 km (4.4 mi)V: Moderate shaking84.3–11.1 km (2.7–6.9 mi)7.6 km (4.7 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (35 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report!
