Todd Monken is getting his first proper look at the Cleveland Browns quarterbacks at OTAs and it wasn’t the best start.Deshaun Watson seems to have the inside track on the starting job for now with Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and sixth-round pick Taylen Green waiting in the wings.Sanders is getting more reps than this stage last seasonGettySanders and Gabriel both threw picks in no-contact 7-on-7 drills on day two and Monken — used to having Lamar Jackson under center — was not pleased.“We threw interceptions in seven-on-seven, for God’s sake. I mean, who does that? There’s no pass rush,” he said Wednesday. “I mean, it’s embarrassing.”Sanders saw a tipped ball snagged by cornerback Myles Harden during the session, while Gabriel was picked off by undrafted free agent cornerback Michael Coats Jr..Watson kept his stat sheet clean, while Green saw the least work.Monken has offered words of encouragement to Sanders ahead of his sophomore season.“I think Shedeur has come miles in terms of his progressions, getting the ball out, his understanding of concepts,” he said. “I think he’s really, really come a long way.”Monken is hoping to name a quarterback by the end of spring, but wasn’t playing ball when asked for an update.“Nothing’s changed other than it’s a different day and you’re firing the same questions,” he said. “We’re going to rotate those guys and play the best player. We’ll see.“You’d love to have it at every position at the end of spring, but you can’t guarantee that. We’ll have it set for [Week 1 opponent] Jacksonville.”Watson’s outrageous fully-guaranteed $230 million contract has been a nightmare for the Browns.Sanders will need to improve is he is to last in the NFLGettyMonken has high standards and will make himself heardGettyHe is in the final season before the team can move on and, as it stands, looks likely to be given a shot.“Talking to people around the league, they believe that Watson could eventually earn this job because he’s a veteran presence and if he can get back to just 70 or 80 percent of what he was from those Houston days, maybe they can sort of salvage this trade; get one productive year out of him,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said.Shedeur Sanders given hope in QB1 raceThere are three more weeks of OTAs before a mandatory minicamp from June 9-11.Sanders took the job from Joe Flacco and Gabriel last season and surprisingly made the Pro Bowl.He will hope to do the same again after splitting first-team reps with Watson Wednesday.“Todd Monken said ‘nothing has changed’ in the quarterback competition and they’ll still divide up the reps,” Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot posted after the session. “He still hopes to know his QB1 by the end of spring ball.”NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare? The Browns quarterback room has been a dysfunctional mess ever since the team was reborn in 1999 — a brief spell of Baker Mayfield dreamland aside.Whatever happens this season, a bumper QB class in the 2027 NFL Draft could be the answer as the franchise looks to find a man capable of leading the team into a gleaming new Super Bowl-worthy stadium. That may be general manager Andrew Berry’s last chance to redeem himself after departing head coach Kevin Stefanski was blamed for 2025 and replaced by Monken.Stay up to date with the NFL across all our talkSPORT platforms – subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest news, opinion, exclusive interviews and our daily unfiltered, unscripted show ‘The S* Word, from 8am ET
