Review: Granblue Fantasy Relink: Endless Ragnarok Takes Time to Heat Up

Wait 5 sec.

We’ve been through the base Granblue Fantasy Relink game before. It’s interesting and earnest! It’s not the strongest JRPG out there or most revolutionary, but it provides experiences with characters people may or may not know and feels like one of those solid PS2-era JRPGs where even if it isn’t enthralling or exciting, it can be a lot of fun. Granblue Fantasy Relink: Endless Ragnarok builds on that with a lot of new content, especially in the post-game, but that means it takes a while to reach. It’s an updated release that does feel like an expansion’s been tacked on to the original game. As almost all of the new additions show up after the end in Granblue Fantasy Relink: Endless Ragnarok, the outset is largely the same. The player character (Gran or Djeeta) continues their journey to reach the Astrals’ island Estalucia and find their missing father alongside Lyria, the dragon Vyrn, and allies like Katalina, Eugen, Rackam, Io, and Rosetta. While flying over the Zegagrande Skydom in the Grandcypher, monsters attack. While the crew defeats them with the help of Lyria summoning Bahamut, the empyreal dragon goes berserk as a result of some kind of seal blocking him from recognizing her and attacks. While attempting to find a way forward and answers, we learn they aren’t the only ones trying to reach Estalucia, with Lilith using the Church of Avia and abducting Lyria to reach the Astral homeland for her own reasons. As a quick refresher, Granblue Fantasy Relink: Endless Ragnarok, like the original, is more an action-RPG that functions like Monster Hunter in some ways due to the sorts of huge boss battles against damage sponges. (You can play with others, or with the NPC allies.) Characters each feel like they fit certain roles due to weapon types and Skills, with some being melee-focused, others ranged, and some being more supportive than DPS-geared. Talent trees help us determine what they’re capable of. When in a fight, Skills to wear down opponent stun gauges so you can use a Line Attack to work with your team or Chain Burst with Skybound Arts to deal greater damage. New to this entry are, when Lyria is around, an ability to perform a Summon or Primal Burst for, again, greater damage. For the most part, it feels familiar! But some of the stronger new abilities only come into play once you get into the post-game. Which, by the way, is hard. Incredibly hard. So difficult that at one point, while grinding, I tried turning on the easiest difficulty and the setting that essentially plays the game for you as long as you move your character toward foes, and it was still a lot to deal with. I found the Primal Bursts most helpful here as I got into the Chaos Quests that task the crew with protecting the people of Zegagrande from the Ragnalia. It is a challenge and, while the CPU is pretty on-top of things here, I found Granblue Fantasy Relink: Endless Ragnarok much more enjoyable at this point with human allies. Fortunately, I did find other folks to play with via matching, and it did help. Go Ad-Free With Siliconera+View the site with no ads, be able to provide direct feedback about what we cover, and be automatically entered into our monthly PC game giveaway.Join Siliconera+ But even more helpful is The Conflux. This doesn’t completely eliminate the grind. However, it does add a bit of a roguelike element that allows you to head into depths alone to get the necessary materials to improve characters and weapons. By going into Cycle 1, 2, or 3 in the depths, you can get items for upgrades. It still takes a lot, but there’s a little bit of a story to help us along and I appreciated being able to go to one place to get what I needed during set runs.  Aside from the new content being a welcome addition and incentive to keep playing, Granblue Fantasy Relink: Endless Ragnarok looks good and runs well on the Switch 2. It pretty much stayed stable at 30fps during my time with it, though some bosses toward the end of the campaign and one Chaos Quests encounter did occasionally fluctuate and did slightly drop. It was never a dramatic issue, fortunately. And the character models for both allies and enemies always looked great, even if particle effects and abilities meant things looked flashy. Granblue Fantasy Relink: Endless Ragnarok builds on the original JRPG to give us more to do after the end. It also runs quite well on the Switch 2, giving us another game to triumph as a handheld success. Some of the new elements, like Conflux, let us better appreciate the solid combat while making the necessary grind a bit easier. However, the big downside this time is it takes a while to get into what’s new and exciting.
