If you are an early bird trying to maximize your Walt Disney World vacation, you know that “rope drop” is the most important part of the day. Being among the first guests in the park is the absolute best way to experience massive E-ticket attractions like Avatar Flight of Passage or Na’vi River Journey without waiting in line for two hours.Credit: Disney For years, the morning rope drop procedure at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has been somewhat claustrophobic and frustrating, forcing thousands of eager tourists to cram into the narrow, winding pathways of The Oasis. However, in a massive operational shift, Disney has fundamentally changed how the morning rush works. Guest holding areas have officially been moved from The Oasis to Discovery Island, completely altering the Early Entry redemption process and how crowds filter into Pandora, Africa, Asia, and the former DinoLand U.S.A.Coupled with some surprise pavement construction currently happening at the park’s front entrance, your morning arrival at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is going to look and feel completely different. Here is a complete breakdown of the new rope drop procedures, the entrance construction, and how to navigate the changes like a theme park pro.The End of The Oasis BottleneckTo understand why this change is such a massive upgrade, you have to understand the old system. Previously, guests arriving before park opening were scanned in and immediately funneled into The Oasis—the lush, heavily forested entryway that connects the turnstiles to Discovery Island.Credit: DisneyBecause The Oasis is designed to feel like a dense, winding jungle, its pathways are notoriously narrow. Holding thousands of hyper-caffeinated tourists in these cramped paths while they waited for the park to open created a severe, officially sanctioned bottleneck. Guests were packed shoulder to shoulder, making it nearly impossible to move, park a stroller, or even step aside to tie a shoe.Thankfully, Disney realized this was a less-than-magical way to start the morning. The holding areas have now officially moved forward into the park, directly onto Discovery Island. The Oasis is no longer a waiting room; it is simply a scenic walkway that guests pass through on their way to the actual holding zones. How the New Rope Drop Timeline WorksIf you are planning to rope drop Disney’s Animal Kingdom on your next trip, here is the new operational timeline you need to be aware of:Credit: Lee (myfrozenlife), Flickr1. Security Opens at 7:00 a.m.The morning begins at the bag check. Security screening generally opens shortly after 7:00 a.m. Once you clear the metal detectors, you will be held in the entrance plaza right in front of the tappoints (the ticket scanners).2. Tappoints Open at 7:15 a.mAt approximately 7:15 a.m., the tappoints will turn green, and everyone—both Disney Resort hotel guests utilizing Early Entry and regular daytime guests—will be allowed to scan into the park simultaneously. This represents a major shift from previous holding procedures.3. Proceed to Discovery IslandOnce you tap in, you will walk straight through The Oasis without stopping. The crowd will flow directly onto Discovery Island, giving guests a massive, open space to spread out, breathe, and formulate their morning strategy. You now have real room to move rather than standing elbow-to-elbow in the jungle.Navigating the Three CheckpointsBecause everyone is let onto Discovery Island at the same time, Disney has implemented a new checkpoint system to separate the Disney Resort hotel guests (who receive 30 minutes of Early theme park Entry) from the non-resort guests.Credit: DisneyFrom the center of Discovery Island, guests heading toward specific lands will now encounter three distinct Early Entry checkpoints. Cast Members are stationed at the pathways leading to Pandora – The World of Avatar, Africa, and Asia.If you are staying at a qualifying Disney Resort hotel, you will scan your MagicBand, ticket, or phone at these checkpoints to prove your eligibility. Once verified, you will be allowed to pass through and line up at the physical “rope” for your desired land. If you are not a resort guest, you will simply wait on Discovery Island until the park officially opens to the general public. What is Open on Discovery Island Before Rope Drop? While having the freedom to roam around the Tree of Life is a massive upgrade over being stuck in The Oasis, you should temper your expectations about what you can actually do while you wait.Credit: Inside The MagicCurrently, absolutely nothing on Discovery Island is open for business before the official park opening time. The major retail shops, including Island Mercantile and Discovery Trading Company, remain firmly locked. You cannot grab a quick coffee or browse for souvenirs to kill time. The one major exception is Disney PhotoPass. Photographers are actively stationed around the Tree of Life during this holding period. This is an incredible opportunity to get a fantastic family photo in front of the park’s icon with relatively low crowds in the background before the chaotic rush to the rides begins.Entrance Construction: Watch Your StepThe rope drop procedures aren’t the only thing changing at the front of the park. If you are visiting soon, you will immediately notice some active construction before you even reach the security gates.Credit: Steven Miller, FlickrFresh new pavement work is currently underway in the Animal Kingdom entrance plaza. A noticeably darker brown section of concrete has been poured just past the security checkpoints and right before the ticket booths along the main walkway. This new, dark brown pavement contrasts sharply with the lighter, weathered, and cracking pavement that currently makes up the rest of the plaza. A visible seam runs between the old and new sections, highlighting exactly where the work stopped. To accommodate the curing concrete, green construction barricades currently block off part of the plaza near the work area.Fortunately, the plaza is massive, and there is still plenty of space for guests to move through the area without causing a major traffic jam. However, because the older pavement throughout the plaza shows significant cracking, theme park insiders speculate that this small patch might just be the beginning of a much broader, multi-week resurfacing project for the entire entrance.A Much-Needed Morning UpgradeOverall, moving the morning holding area from The Oasis to Discovery Island is a remarkably smart, albeit long-overdue, operational change. It eliminates the claustrophobic crush of the morning crowds, allows guests actually to enjoy the beautiful sightlines of the Tree of Life, and makes the logistical separation of Early Entry guests much smoother.Credit: Sean X Liu, FlickrCombined with the fresh pavement smoothing out the entrance plaza, your morning arrival at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is shaping up to be a much more relaxed and magical experience. The post The End of the Oasis Bottleneck: Animal Kingdom Just Made Massive Changes to Morning Rope Drop appeared first on Inside the Magic.
