MEP Alex Agius Saliba has criticised what he described as discrimination against Maltese consumers, arguing that new charges affecting purchases from platforms such as TEMU and Shein undermine the very purpose of the European Union’s single market.In a video shared online, Agius Saliba said Maltese shoppers are effectively paying a “double price” compared to consumers elsewhere in Europe following the introduction of the EU’s new €3 fee on low-value imports.“The additional €3 imposed by Europe on everyone buying from TEMU and Shein is resulting in Maltese people paying double what other Europeans are paying,” he said.The MEP argued that the situation places Malta at a disadvantage despite the EU’s commitment to a unified internal market, where consumers across member states are meant to enjoy equal access and treatment.Captioning the video, Agius Saliba wrote: “Follow here what I am doing,” indicating that he intends to continue raising the issue at a European level.He added that the current situation “defeats the very purpose of the EU single market”, as Maltese consumers continue to face additional costs when shopping online compared to their European counterparts.Do you think Maltese consumers are being treated unfairly?
