A new plan is in place for Floyd Mayweather to rematch Manny Pacquiao in January 2027.That’s according to CEO of Pacquiao’s MP Promotions Jas Mathur, who has revealed his team is waiting for ‘technicalities’ unrelated to the Filipino boxing great to be resolved to progress with scheduling the bout.Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2 was originally scheduled to take place at Las Vegas’ Sphere in SeptemberGettyMayweather and Pacquiao had been scheduled to run back boxing’s biggest money fight in a professional rematch on September 19 at Sphere in Las Vegas, live on Netflix.Their 2015 meeting generated a whopping 4.6million pay-per-view buys — the highest in boxing’s history — and both men took home a combined reported purse of $300m.However, the agreed fight was postponed indefinitely last month due to a series of obstacles, including a disagreement between camps over whether it would be contested professionally or as an exhibition.Mayweather was threatened over breach of contract for insisting the clash was an exhibition, while Pacquiao’s team had asserted it was a pro contest.‘Money’ was also dealing with other legal issues, having taken financial advances from his agreement with Pacquiao, when he had also signed to fight Mike Tyson and Mike Zambidis.Mayweather vs Zambidis was then cancelled in late June following a lawsuit from events company CSI, which claimed the American was paid $4.65m to exclusively promote fights against Pacquiao and Tyson — not Zambidis.New date for Mayweather-Pacquiao 2With the Tyson clash now being planned to take place in the US this autumn, new plans are also being drawn up for Mayweather’s rematch with Pacquiao.“Obviously, right now there are some technicalities that are unrelated to Manny and unrelated to us that are being resolved,” Mathur explained during a news conference this week.“Once that’s all said and done, then we anticipate that this should take place sometime in early 2027.“January is the plan.”Mayweather has contested several exhibition bouts, including against Logan Paul, since his last professional fight with Conor McGregor in 2017Amanda Westcott/ShowtimePacquiao drew with Mario Barrios in a WBC welterweight title fight last time out – the belt is now held by Ryan Garcia, who is expected to fight Conor Benn nextGettyTeam Pacquiao ‘want to break records’Pacquiao wants to stay active ahead of the rematch with Mayweather, having fought Mario Barrios to a draw on his return to the ring last July after four years out.“Ryan Garcia? Possibility, yes. We’ve also brought that up,” Mathur added, speaking on who ‘PacMan’ could fight in the meantime.“Ryan has another fight [against Conor Benn], so everything’s on the table.“It’s all on the table. Ryan will fight Manny, Manny will fight Ryan. Rolly [Romero] will fight Manny, Manny will fight Rolly.“All of these people are on the table. It’s not an issue, but we have to focus on what’s in front of us right now.“Like I said earlier, we want to break records.”Regardless of who Pacquiao lands on for a fight at the back end of 2026, Mathur has said it will likely be an exhibition.Watch Boxing on DAZN*If you click a link in this boxout, we will earn affiliate revenueSign up to DAZN to access the definitive subscription for boxing fans.Upgrade to DAZN Ultimate from just £24.99/month, guaranteeing access to 185+ fights annually, a minimum of 12 pay-per-views at no extra cost, as well as every Lega Serie A match and other elite football access.Alternatively, DAZN Standard is just £15.99/month, with the caveat you will have to pay for pay-per-view events.Click here to sign up.
