Which Premier League player has the biggest gap between how good people remember him being and how good he actually was week to week?

Wait 5 sec.

Not someone who was bad. Someone genuinely great whose reputation has grown because of nostalgia, highlights, big moments, or famous quotes from other players. My answer is Paul Scholes. Obviously brilliant, but the way he gets discussed now, you would think he was unquestionably the best midfielder of his generation. A lot of that reputation seems to have grown after retirement, helped by compilations and endless “Xavi said this, Zidane said that” quotes. The reverse might be David Silva. He was consistently world class for a decade, controlled games every week, and was central to four title-winning teams, yet rarely gets placed in the same mythical category. Who’s the biggest example in either direction? submitted by /u/No_Salt_3332 [link] [comments]
