The depth of the quake could not be determined, but is assumed to be shallow. The earthquake was felt over a large region.. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.Quake Data | Interactive map | Seismograms | User reports | Aftershocks | Earlier quakes here | Quakes in Mexico | Quakes in Guatemala | Quakes in El Salvador | Quakes in Belize | Estado de Chiapas | Departamento de San Marcos | Departamento de QuetzaltenangoHint: Click on the image to see different maps of this quake!Major magnitude 7.4 earthquake at unknown depth17 Jul 14:52 UTC: First to report: VolcanoDiscovery after 4 minutes.17 Jul 14:57: Now using data updates from USGSUpdate Fri, 17 Jul 2026, 15:01Felt earthquake: 7.4 quake 71 km WSW of Puerto Madero, Mexico, 12 minutes ago - 127 shake reports so farNumerous people reported to have felt the quake. Attached is an updated map showing the shaking felt (and reported) by this earthquake.Update Fri, 17 Jul 2026, 15:00Very strong magnitude 7.4 earthquake 98 km southwest of Tapachula, MexicoAn earthquake of magnitude 7.4 occurred in the morning on Friday, July 17th, 2026, at 8:48 am local time near Tapachula, Tapachula Municipality, Estado de Chiapas, Mexico, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), which listed it as a magnitude 7.4 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure. Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include Moderate shaking probably occurred in Ciudad Hidalgo (pop. 14,600) located 96 km from the epicenter, Tapachula (pop. 353,700) 98 km away, Huixtla (pop. 32,000) 100 km away, and Pijijiapan (pop. 50,100) 145 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt4168–810 km (104–503 mi)487 km (303 mi)II: Very weak shaking18272–668 km (169–415 mi)438 km (272 mi)III: Weak shaking41167–1,081 km (104–672 mi)380 km (236 mi)IV: Light shaking4492–812 km (57–505 mi)282 km (175 mi)V: Moderate shaking28111–858 km (69–533 mi)269 km (167 mi)VI: Strong shaking5184–269 km (114–167 mi)247 km (154 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (158 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 87 km (54 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Jul 17, 2026 08:48 am (GMT -6)15 minutes ago - felt7.410 km0 km - This quakeEstado de Chiapas, MexicoMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 26 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 635 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 7 or higher: 0.05 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 21.3 years)Mag. 6 or higher: 0.29 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 3.5 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 4.2 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 238 quakes per year (or 19.9 quakes per month)Mag. 3 or higher: 625 quakes per year (or 52 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 631 quakes per year (or 53 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 6 quakes above magnitude 7 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 20 to 25 years.Number of quakes per yearPrevious quakes in the same area of this earthquakeStrongest in 9 yearsThe earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of  Mexico in over 9 years. Earlier, the last quake of equal or greater strength near the present epicenter had been a magnitude 8.0 earthquake on Thursday, Sep 7, 2017, at 10:49 pm (GMT -6 local time) in 109 km (68 mi) distance to the northwest:Mag. 8.0 earthquake North Pacific Ocean - Estado de Chiapas, Mexico - Sep 7, 2017 - Below is a list and map of larger or recent quakes that had occurred near the epicenter before this earthquake (within up to 100 km/61 mi distance, up to 300 km/183 mi for very large quakes above mag. 7).
