To no one’s surprise, people are very keen on living through their memories of a much better Call of Duty, with over five million people hopping onto its PlayStation 5 revival. Black Ops 1 also saw some two million folks play it over the course of its first week on modern consoles. According to MysticRyan, who spoke on Spawncast’s Click R3 podcast, over 5.25 million people played Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on the PlayStation 5 during its first week of availability on the console. This old gem was ported to both PS4 and PS5 after spending 14 years stuck on other consoles and PC, falling into relative obscurity but never leaving the collective memory of all the millions who loved it back when it launched in 2012. Call of Duty: Black Ops 1, which is Treyarch’s best story to date in my opinion, also had around 1.9 million people check it out over the first week. Both of these games cost $39.99 and require a PS Plus subscription to play online, which most users paid for, and that just goes to show how much appreciation and appeal both of these games continue to enjoy over a decade and a half later. Memes and clips of notorious “CoD lobbies” have been cropping up over the last eight days, with people imitating infamous moments from old Call of Duty and trying their best to maintain late-2000s angsty teen personas. People are screaming into their mics, arguing over the littlest things, and pretending like 2012 never ended and MLG 420 blaze it hax0r l33t culture is still alive and well. Maybe it is.
