A cyberattack hit one of Japan’s largest food companies, Nichirei, disrupting logistics and shipments. The company is gradually restoring operations.Nichirei is one of Japan’s largest food companies, best known for its frozen food business. Founded in 1942 and headquartered in Tokyo, it operates globally through dozens of subsidiaries.The food giant confirmed that the system outage reported on July 13 resulted from a cyberattack targeting its servers. The company immediately set up an emergency response team to investigate the incident and coordinate recovery efforts. To reduce the risk of further attacks, Nichirei is withholding technical details about the breach while it continues to restore affected systems and assess the full impact.“Nichirei Corporation (the “Company”) experienced system failures on July 13, 2026, and has since been investigating its cause. The Company hereby announces the facts identified through the investigation to date and the measures it plans to take going forward.” reads the notice of incident published by the company. “Facts Identified through the Investigation On the day the incident occurred, the Company established an emergency response headquarters and has been conducting investigations and taking measures toward recovery. As a result of the investigation, the Company confirmed that its servers had been subject to a cyberattack. To prevent further potential damage, the Company will refrain from disclosing details of the cyberattack.”The cyber attack has caused system outages that are disrupting operations for restaurant chains, major retailers, delivery services, and other businesses that rely on the company.“System failures caused by a cyberattack at frozen food giant Nichirei Corporation are affecting restaurant chains, major retailers, delivery services and other businesses.” reported NHK World Japan. “Nichirei says it will begin resuming services starting Friday, but it cannot say when its operations, including its supply-delivery service, will get fully back to normal.”Nichirei said some of the compromised servers contained personal information, raising the possibility of a data breach. The company has notified Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission and is continuing its investigation. If it confirms any data leakage, it will inform affected parties. To contain the attack, Nichirei disconnected group systems on July 13, disrupting refrigerated warehouse operations and frozen food shipments. After working with external cybersecurity experts, the company plans to gradually restore affected operations starting July 17.“”The investigation found that some of the affected servers stored personal information. Accordingly, the Company has submitted an initial report to the Personal Information Protection Commission as a matter involving the possibility of leakage.” continues the notice. “The Company will continue its investigation and, should any leakage be confirmed, will promptly report the matter to the relevant parties.””Nichirei is assessing the potential financial impact of the cyberattack.
