At the time, she was a bartender, and what began as an unexpected meeting eventually grew into a long-lasting marriage.More than two decades later, the couple shares four daughters, has worked together professionally behind the scenes, and continues to make family a priority—even as Matt’s career takes him around the world. During a 2011 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he recalled, “I literally saw her across a crowded room, literally. Eight years and four kids later, that’s my life. I don’t know how else our paths would’ve crossed if that didn’t happen.”View full post on YouTubeLuciana remembers the evening a little differently.“Matt’s story is that he saw me across the room, and there was a light on me. And I’m like, ‘Yeah, it was a nightclub—there were lights everywhere!’” she told Vogue Australia. She explained that Matt came behind the bar after fans began approaching him for photos and autographs.“He had started getting recognized and asked for pictures and autographs, and then it got kind of aggressive because people are drinking and stuff,” she said. “So he came and hid behind the bar...[wanting to] just hang out back there and have a drink. He says, ‘Oh, I saw you, and I really wanted to talk to you.’”Rather than letting him stand around, she gave him a job.“I said: ‘You know, if you’re going to be back here, you can’t just be standing there!’” she recalled. “He had trained as a bartender for a film years before, so he started making drinks. And he made me a ton of money in tips that night, because of course everyone wanted to go and see him. So it turned into a really fun night and then 15 years later, here we are!”She was already a mom when they met.Luciana was raising her daughter, Alexia, from a previous relationship when she met Matt. She told Vogue Australia that when Matt invited her to continue the evening with him and his friends, she declined because she needed to get home.“I was like, ‘I can’t, I have a four-year-old daughter, I’m not going anywhere’...and that was one of the things he loved, that I had a daughter,” she said.“He said, ‘I love that you’re a mom and that’s your priority.’ Some guys might have been different, they might think it’s complicated, but for him it wasn’t. When you meet somebody that you have a connection with, that’s just the person that you have a connection with, all the other stuff—the movie-star part—wasn’t really a factor. It was just Matt, to me he’s just Matt.”The couple later welcomed three daughters together—Isabella, Gia, and Stella—and Matt has long considered Alexia his own daughter as well.Dave M. Speaking to Parade in 2017, Matt explained that the rings contain tiny diamonds from his grandparents’ wedding ring.“They weren’t quality diamonds; it was what [my grandfather] could afford,” he said. “But the marriage lasted. They were married for over 60 years. It wasn’t about the ring; it was about the marriage.”“So when I told my mother that I was marrying Lucy, she gave me that ring and there were these six little diamonds. We took three of them and we put them on the inside of my band, and then we took three and we put them on the inside of her band. So they’re not visible, but we’re hopefully carrying the best part of that union with us.”They make spending time together a priority.Over the years, Matt has shared one relationship rule that has helped their marriage endure.“We have a two week rule,” he told YourTango in 2021. “I’m not away for more than two weeks. I think you need to be with the person you love as much as possible. My wife is my soulmate. I don’t like being apart from her.”There have been rare exceptions. While promoting Oppenheimer in 2023, Matt joked to Entertainment Weekly that he negotiated a break from acting with one exception.“I had—not to get too personal—negotiated extensively with my wife that I was taking time off,” he said. “The one caveat to my taking time off was if Chris Nolan called.”She’s been one of Matt’s biggest supporters.Matt has repeatedly credited Luciana with helping him navigate both his career and life.During an interview with Jake’s Takes in 2023, he recalled feeling discouraged while filming a movie that wasn’t turning out the way he’d hoped.“I remember my wife pulling me up because I fell into a depression,” he said. Her advice was simple.“She just said, ‘We’re here now.’”Matt added, “I do pride myself, in a large part because of her, at being a professional actor. And what being a professional actor means is you go and you do the 15-hour day and give it absolutely everything, even in what you know is going to be a losing effort. If you can do that with the best possible attitude, then you’re a pro. And she really helped me with that.”She has started working behind the scenes in film.Although Luciana wasn’t part of the entertainment industry when she met Matt, she’s taken on a larger role behind the camera in recent years. She served as an executive producer on The Instigators in 2024 and produced The Rip in 2026.Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at The Instigators premiere, Matt said the producing credit had been years in the making.“She’s been reading every script and watching every cut of every movie for 21 years. This is the first time we ever kind of codified it,” he said.He added that Luciana initially resisted taking credit for her work.“She didn’t even want to take the credit. She was there every day, she was doing all this work on the script, and then she was like, ‘Nah, I don’t want to take the credit.’”“The other producers on the movie...came of their own volition [and said], ‘If you’re not taking credit, we’re not taking credit.’ It was very sweet. She succumbed and took the credit.”She says they don’t take their relationship for granted.Luciana has rarely spoken publicly about her marriage, but when Vogue Australia asked about the secret to a lasting relationship, her answer was refreshingly simple.“I have no idea!” she said.“I just know I think we both feel, really, really lucky to have met each other so we don’t take that for granted. It’s life and marriage, so there’s ups and downs you know, but overall it’s easy and it’s fun. And he’s such a good dad.”
