I’m a 30-year-old Black woman, and this is based on my personal experience. I know this is a generalization, so if it doesn’t apply to you, feel free to scroll. I’ve dated mostly west and central African men, but I’ve also dated men from other racial backgrounds. One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of the African men I’ve dated, and even some African male friends or relatives seem to put lighter skin or white women on a pedestal. Every African ex I’ve had told me, directly to my face, that lighter skin was more attractive or that they preferred white women. I’m medium brown, my sister is darker than me, and some of my exes even made fun of her for being darker. I’ve heard comments like, “It’s okay, our kids won’t be dark because you’re lighter than me.” Whenever I looked through their phones, it was the same pattern: pictures of lighter-skinned women, comments under white women’s posts, and almost no interest in women who looked like me. After seeing this repeatedly, it started to feel like more than just a coincidence. It honestly makes me wonder where these attitudes come from. Personally, I feel like a lot of Black men, especially African men, would benefit from therapy to unpack colorism, internalized biases, and the beauty standards they’ve grown up with. Has anyone else had similar experiences, or have I just been incredibly unlucky? submitted by /u/Ok_Passenger203 [link] [comments]
