Bandai Namco makes a number of figure tiers, with the SH Figuarts being at the top and coming in around $70-90 and more affordable ones clocking in closer to $20-30. The Godzilla Rampage line is at the lower end. The thing is, after looking at the MechaGodzilla 2003 action figure in the collection, which is based on MFS-3 Kiryu from Godzilla: Tokyo SOS movie, I found it offers more articulation options than I expected from the budget line. It’s still about what you would think a $27.99 action figure would offer, but offers quite a lot of possibilities. First, there’s some light assembly required for the MechaGodzilla figure. This doesn’t just apply to the included and optional weaponry. It arrives with its tail, right leg, and right arm removed from the body. The tail consists of two parts. Both the tail and leg snap onto peg joints at the hip and spine. Meanwhile, the arm has a peg at the shoulder that slips into a hole on the torso. All of these parts are very easy to pop into place and don’t need to be forced into position. Photos by Siliconera Now, the fact that it does require some assembly did lead to a few articulation elements that felt a little disappointing to me. The primary issue has to do with the tail. It is split up to two parts and attaches to a peg at the base of MechaGodzilla’s spine. Now, it does allow for some movement, mainly in terms of rotation. However, as a result of the positioning and design, you can’t really get too active or intricate with it. It can’t lift up. It can’t go further down. There’s also a very noticeable gap between the base of the spine and tail itself once attached. The other is that it means you can’t immediately pop the Godzilla Rampage MechaGodzilla 2003 action figure back in the box for storage or display purposes without disassembling it. You need to pop the right arm, right leg, and tail parts off again to do so. Now, the arm and tail pieces are easy to remove. I found the right leg quite difficult to yank off of its peg, to the point that I was almost afraid I’d break it if I did so to return it to the box. Both the head and neck move, and the mouth can open and close. However, if you want to pose it with the rocket launchers and back unit in place, you must keep the head and neck in one stationary position to keep that secured. (It does not attach flush to the body and is fiddly even when the neck is in the right spot to keep it affixed to the action figure.) Railguns can be attached to both wrists and turned. The wrists, elbows, and shoulders all move. So do the legs, knees, ankles, and both tail parts can twist. The most posable parts do tend to be the arms, though the knees and legs can be adjusted for different positions. Also, as a result of the design, no stand is needed and MechaGodzilla can stand on its own with no supports. While the nature of the tail joint and back unit is a little precarious, I do appreciate the options in general for posing. While we don’t get the Triple Hyper Maser Cannon from Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, the railguns and optional spiral claw for the right hand are nice options for alternate looks. There’s more to it than there seemed to be at a glance. The articulation options do allow for some different poses and the extra weaponry can be a nice touch. However, since there are parts to assemble and it is a more budget item, the fit isn’t always flush and some elements can be fiddly.
