The referee for the first World Cup semi-final of the week was left laughing at himself after forgetting a key piece of equipment.Salvadoran official Ivan Barton was in charge of the clash between France and Spain on Tuesday – but after ten minutes, he was left a bit embarrassed.Barton forgot his foam spray and had to pause play to be handed his canGettyBarton awarded a free-kick, going on to book Adrien Rabiot for a poor tackle on opposing midfielder Dani Olmo.But as he looked to go and mark the position of the ball and the France wall, he realised he was missing his spray. All officials use a foam spray to indicate where a free-kick should be taken from and where the wall should stand.So, it meant Barton was missing a major part of his equipment, which he very quickly realised in Arlington, Texas. He then had to wander over towards the touchline, confusing commentators and players, to receive his spray. As he approached the fourth official, he could be seen smiling, grabbing the spray and then running back.It appears that Barton had forgotten to bring out the can when starting the game, leaving it in the dressing room.Fortunately for him, the pause in play only lasted around 20 seconds and then the semi-final continued.A busy clashBarton had to quickly move on from his embarrassing moment as he was called into action soon after.France’s Lucas Digne caught Lamine Yamal in the box as the young superstar nipped in to intercept his clearance.View Tweet: https://t.co/F7bWNsVwsABarton went on to award a penalty to Spain for a foul committed on Lamine YamalGettyYamal pushed the ball away from Digne as he attempted to hoof clear, with the incoming PSG left-back kicking his rival instead.Barton quickly pointed to the spot and after a VAR check, the decision stood, with Spain given a penalty.Kylian Mbappe was left angry with the decision, but no complaints were going to change the officials’ minds.Mikel Oyarzabal then stepped up and scored, putting La Roja into the lead in the semi-final on Tuesday night.As for Mbappe, he cut an anonymous figure in the match at the time of writing.Things got worse for Les Bleus when Spain doubled their lead on 58 minutes when Pedro Porro slotted past Mike Maignan after playing a neat one-two with Dani Olmo.A place in Sunday’s World Cup final is on the line in the semis, with England or Argentina awaiting the winner.
