Environmental NGO Żibel has removed three ghost nets from Maltese waters during a morning dedicated to protecting the island’s marine life.The operation also saw the team document and help marine animals affected by the abandoned fishing gear, which continues to threaten sea life long after it is lost or discarded.Known as ghost nets, these abandoned fishing nets can trap turtles, fish, octopuses and other marine species, leaving them to suffer from starvation, suffocation, severe injuries, amputations and, in many cases, death.By recovering the nets, Żibel helped eliminate a hidden danger lurking beneath the surface while highlighting the ongoing need to protect Malta’s fragile marine ecosystems from abandoned fishing equipment.Have you ever spotted ghost nets or abandoned fishing gear while diving or swimming?Credit: @zibelofficial•
