REPORT: Disney’s ‘Percy Jackson’ Facing Imminent Cancellation as ‘Harry Potter’ Takes Over

Wait 5 sec.

Percy Jackson is preparing for his most important season yet — but fans fear another young wizard could bury it before it even comes to a close.Percy Jackson and the Olympians will return for Season 3 later this year, adapting The Titan’s Curse and finally taking the franchise beyond the point reached by its widely criticized film series starring Logan Lerman. Disney has yet to confirm an exact premiere date.Credit: Disney+That alone would make the season a significant television event. Unfortunately for Percy, another enormous fantasy adaptation is arriving during the same period.HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will officially premiere at Christmas, launching a planned multi-season adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s book series. The shows may live on separate streaming services, but their overlapping audiences, holiday release windows, and similar coming-of-age fantasy stories have left some Percy Jackson fans deeply concerned. Why Fans Think ‘Harry Potter’ Will Overshadow ‘Percy Jackson’“Once Harry Potter comes out the PJO show could become irrelevant no matter when it’s released,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “If it gets everything right that PJO has got wrong then it’ll be a massive hit and will once again dwarf everything in sight.”Credit: HBOThat concern is not necessarily that existing Percy Jackson fans will suddenly abandon the show. The two franchises already share a substantial audience, and many viewers will likely watch both. The issue is that, as a brand-new adaptation of one of the world’s most recognizable entertainment properties, Harry Potter is likely to dominate entertainment coverage, social media discussions, advertising, and general curiosity throughout the holiday season.Realistically speaking, its controversies will only increase that attention. Rowling’s divisive views on the transgender community, endless social media rants (including those directed at former Harry Potter stars, such as Emma Watson), and involvement with the new series have attracted years of backlash, but the debate has not prevented audiences from engaging with the reboot. The first teaser amassed more than 277 million views across platforms within 48 hours, becoming HBO and HBO Max’s most-watched trailer ever by more than double. On YouTube alone, the trailer has reached 12.6 million views. However, that figure does not automatically mean Percy has already lost. The official Percy Jackson Season 2 trailer from November 2025 currently has an even larger 16.4 million views.Trailer interest and sustained viewership are not always the same thing, though. Harry Potter also has the advantage of novelty. General audiences who skipped or abandoned Percy Jackson may still sample a new Hogwarts series out of nostalgia, curiosity, controversy, or interest in seeing how it compares to the original films.“Harry Potter just has more curiosity behind it because of how big the IP is and because of JKR’s controversies,” another fan argued, predicting that entertainment coverage would prioritize the newer and larger series.A November release may not offer Percy much protection, either. The long-anticipated The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping arrives in theaters on November 20. This finally tells the story of Haymitch Abernathy’s Hunger Games and is also slated to feature Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen) and Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark).Credit: Disney+And, like Harry Potter, it has considerable overlap with the young adult audience Disney needs to attract.‘Percy Jackson’ Cannot Afford Another DeclineCompetition would matter less if Percy Jackson were entering Season 3 with unstoppable momentum. But, according to Luminate, Season 2 generated 483 million U.S. streaming minutes during its first three weeks. Season 1 attracted 1.3 billion minutes over the equivalent period, representing estimated totals of 11.2 million views and 31.5 million views, respectively.Fans also widely criticized some changes made to the show’s plot – primarily, the decision to retcon the circumstances of Thalia Grace’s transformation and revival in the finale.Disney renewed the third season before Season 2 premiered, meaning the decision was made before that apparent decline became clear.A fourth season has not received the same early green light.Credit: DisneyRick Riordan recently admitted that even he does not know whether Disney will continue the adaptation. He suggested the company may be waiting to see the newest numbers before committing to The Battle of the Labyrinth – which, as fans have pointed out, is arguably the most TV-ready of any installment in the series.“They also tend to be very conservative about their decision-making and prefer to look at the most recent numbers before deciding how/when/whether to renew things,” Riordan wrote (via Goodreads). He added that Disney “may be waiting to see how season three does,” while stressing that this was speculation and he knew nothing concrete – especially considering the fact that Josh D’Amaro took over the CEO position from Bob Iger earlier this year. That makes Season 3 less of a guaranteed next chapter and more of an audition for the show’s survival. The good news is that The Titan’s Curse is one of the series’ most popular books. It introduces Nico and Bianca di Angelo, the Hunters of Artemis, Atlas, and several major storylines that have never previously appeared in live action.Percy also has something Harry does not: audiences have already spent two seasons becoming attached to Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, and the rest of the show’s cast. Meanwhile, reactions to the new Harry Potter cast have been divisive.Credit: Disney Parks BlogStill, Harry Potter does not need to steal every Percy Jackson viewer to cause problems. It only needs to absorb enough media coverage and casual interest to make Percy’s numbers look disappointing when Disney begins examining whether Season 4 is worth the investment. After the original movies ended before reaching The Titan’s Curse, fans could now face an arguably even more frustrating outcome: finally seeing the third book adapted, only for Harry Potter to help prevent the story from continuing any further.Do you think Harry Potter could prevent Percy Jackson and the Olympians from receiving a fourth season? The post REPORT: Disney’s ‘Percy Jackson’ Facing Imminent Cancellation as ‘Harry Potter’ Takes Over appeared first on Inside the Magic.
