BJP credits Modi govt. for Warangal airport revival, urges TG to act on land transfer - The HinduPublished - July 15, 2026 06:38 pm IST - HYDERABADBJP Telangana president N. Ramchander Rao on Wednesday advised Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to focus on expediting land acquisition to ensure that the Warangal Airport project progresses without unnecessary delays.“Instead of making political statements or attempting to claim credit, the State government should hand over the required land so that airport development can proceed rapidly, fulfilling the long-standing aspirations of the people of Warangal,” he told the media at the party’s State office.“The Narendra Modi government remains firmly committed to the comprehensive development of Telangana, and the proposed revival of Warangal Airport at Mamnoor stands as yet another example of that unwavering commitment,” he claimed.Mr. Rao pointed out that Mamnoor Airport is one of India’s oldest airports, established during the pre-Independence era, and was once regarded as one of the largest airfields in the region. Despite its historical importance, the airport remained non-operational for several decades.One of the major hurdles, he said, was the 150-km exclusivity restriction under Clause 5.2 of the Hyderabad International Airport Concession Agreement when the GMR Rajiv Gandhi International Airport was being developed at Shamshabad.“It was only because of the persistent efforts of the Modi government that a No Objection Certificate (NOC), granting a one-time waiver of this restriction for the development and operationalisation of Mamnoor Airport, was issued,” he said.Highlighting the Modi government’s commitment to the project, he said that in September 2021, then Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had written to the then Telangana Chief Minister seeking his personal intervention to expedite issues related to strengthening aviation infrastructure in the State, specifically mentioning the operationalisation of Warangal Airport.The BJP leader also recalled that the erstwhile UPA government had, in 2011, announced plans to develop and operationalise 13 airports across the country, including Warangal Airport. “Yet, despite making announcements and conducting feasibility studies, the UPA government failed to operationalise these airports. It was only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office that progress was achieved, with seven of those airports becoming operational,” he said.“If the Congress was genuinely committed to the project, why did it not remove the obstacles and operationalise the airport during the UPA years?” he questioned.Published - July 15, 2026 06:38 pm ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
