Jai Opetaia is set to feature on the Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn undercard on September 12 in Las Vegas.Organisers are still working on the two-time cruiserweight world champion’s opponent, but everything appears to be moving in the right direction.Opetaia is reportedly set to return on the T-Mobile Arena bill on September 12GettyThe news was first reported by Sam Gordon of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.Opetaia (30-0) last set foot in the ring in March when he made his Zuffa Boxing debut against Brandon Glanton at the UFC Apex. While he picked up a lopsided unanimous decision victory over the American, Opetaia was stripped of his IBF cruiserweight title in the aftermath. The IBF had initially sanctioned the fight on the basis that the Zuffa belt, which was also placed on the line, would be presented as nothing more than “a trophy or token of recognition.”However, the IBF swiftly withdrew its sanctioning after the Zuffa strap was introduced as a “cruiserweight world title” at the pre-fight press conference.Opetaia was forced to relinquish his IBF belt a few weeks later.Regardless, he is still widely considered to be the best 200lber on the planet and is not short of options in the deep Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight division. Who could Jai Opetaia fight next? Among the most likely potential opponents for Opetaia’s September return is Chris Billam-Smith, who stopped Ryan Rozicki in an early Fight of the Year contender in June.In the immediate aftermath of his victory, Billam-Smith called for a fight with Opetaia and Zuffa is understood to be keen on the fight. During a recent appearance on talkSPORT, Billam-Smith said of a fight with Opetaia: “For sure, that is the fight I want.Garcia defends his WBC welterweight title against Benn in the main event“If it’s not next, it’s got to be the one after. “I know there has been talk of Jai taking other fights, so I’m not entirely sure what is happening yet…“I’m going to be staying in shape and be ready for whatever comes next, and if that is Jai Opetaia then fantastic.” Another option is a fight with WBC cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian. The pair were reportedly finalising a deal in May, but the WBC has since ordered Mikaelian to face unified WBA and WBO champion David Benavidez, throwing a spanner in the works.
