England crashed out of the World Cup in gut-wrenching fashion in the semifinals against Argentina, but Tottenham’s Djed Spence has been universally hailed for his performance. It was no surprise to see Spence being given the nod to start at left-back against Argentina after his brilliant cameos off the bench against Mexico and Norway. The Tottenham defender was arguably the Three Lions’ best player on the day, as Argentina came from a goal down to win 2-1, owing to some Lionel Messi magic in the final 20 minutes of the game. While the inquest is underway on why England threw the game away in the manner they did, the Spurs star is receiving widespread praise for his performance.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramTottenham star Djed Spence hailed after tackle of the tournamentMost publications have given Djed Spence an 8 out of 10 for his performance against Argentina, naming him as England’s player of the match. One went even further and gave him a 9!Unsurprisingly, the 25-year-old is getting a lot of plaudits for his outstanding recovery tackle on Giuliano Simeone, which saw the full-back make up 10 yards on the Atletico Madrid man and time his tackle brilliantly just as the winger was about to get off his shot. The Metro wrote: “Switched on and aggressive down the left, forcing Argentine mistakes going forward and committed at the back. His challenge on Simeone shortly after Gordon’s opener was as good as any goal. 9/10.”The Guardian said about Spence: “Has won over the doubters and then some. A Bobby Moore-esque tackle to stop Simeone. 8/10.”Sky Sports said: “A surprise inclusion from Tuchel but Spence was superb. It was a selection that paid dividends, and his tackle to stop Giuliano Simeone from getting a shot away early in the second half was one of the moments of the match. 8/10.”The Independent said: “The Spurs defender was the player of the game for England. He made good early dribbles, made space for Gordon and looked a real threat in attack, while also putting in a superb sliding challenge to prevent Simeone right after England had scored. 8/10.”BBC Sport said about the Spurs man: “Continued where he left off from his impressive substitute performance against Norway. A great one-v-one defender and his pace offered England a threat in behind when Anthony Gordon went central. Got caught out once, but Pickford produced the save. A memorable last-ditch tackle to stop Simeone. 8/10.”Finally, The Telegraph said: “Celebrated tackle on Guiliano Simeone like scoring a goal – and the crowd celebrated in kind. Rewarded for his cameo against Norway with a start ahead of Nico O’Reilly and repaid Tuchel’s faith with an outstanding performance. He is not afraid to take on his opponent through skill and speed and got into promising areas on the left flank. Was also solid in defence with his blocks and tackles. Has come into form. 8/10.”Spurs’ asking price for Spence may have just gone upAccording to reports, Inter Milan are in talks with Tottenham over a deal for Spence, who could end up leaving N17 before the start of the new season. Some sources indicate that Spurs want more than £40m for the full-back, and one would not be surprised if that asking price has now gone up by another £10m or £20m following his World Cup heroics.A lot of Tottenham fans are pleading with Roberto De Zerbi not to sell Spence, and that is certainly understandable, given the quality he has shown at the biggest stage this summer.READ MORE: Tottenham could receive a £17m boost thanks to Aston Villa’s latest announcementThe post ‘Bobby Moore-esque’ – Tottenham’s Djed Spence showered with 9/10 and 8/10 reviews appeared first on Spurs Web.
