76-year-old Florida senior Nancy Dello Stritto wasn’t expecting drama when she opened her mail to find her new license plate. But when she saw what it was, she went “ballistic”. As reported by CBS News Miami, Ms Dello Stritto is now the owner of the license plate “SQZ A55”, which the report primly notes “can be interpreted to spell out a crude phrase.” The fact that Florida license plates feature a pair of plump oranges in the center doesn’t exactly help matters. Dello Stritto says she can’t believe that something like this can be legally issued, telling journalists: “I don’t think a woman that lives in a senior community that’s going to be 77 years olf next month will be driving around with what this plate has to say. When I saw that, I went ballistic. However, her sons apparently find the plate highly amusing and have been encouraging her to keep it rather than send it back. Apparently, she’s conducted a poll of her family and friends, saying the current tally is 16-1 in favor of her keeping it. Now she wonders if maybe her being SQZ A55 is fate, saying, “I’m resigned to it; maybe it was destined for it to be on my car. I can handle it; maybe I’ll even get some honks.” Perhaps it could have been worse, as an Arizona woman was left “in a mild state of panic” after receiving a new license plate that she worried was going to make people assume she was a racist. CBS reports that they’ve explored how this happened. They say that Florida license plates are manufactured by prisoners and then distributed through county agencies, with Dello Stritto’s plate being mailed to her from the Broward County Property Tax Collector’s office. It’s unclear why the taxman is sending out license plates, but an office manager confirmed that if Dello Stritto gets tired of being SQZ A55, they will replace any plate deemed offensive without any extra charge. License plates are also currently a political hot-button issue, with the spread of automated license plate reader systems like Flock cameras generating a lot of anger as people argue they violate the Constitution. A former Air Force mechanic has become something of a symbol for the fightback after being charged with 13 felonies for destroying them.
