Malta has launched the procurement process for its European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet, bringing the country one step closer to introducing a single digital identity that can be used across the European Union. The Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) has issued a call for tenders to develop the wallet and the systems needed to support it, marking a key milestone in Malta’s implementation of the European Digital Identity Framework.Once introduced, the EUDI Wallet will allow Maltese citizens and residents to securely prove their identity both online and in person, store official documents such as driving licences, verify their age when required and electronically sign documents. The wallet will also be recognised across EU member states, making it easier to access public and private services while travelling or living abroad.Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Minister Silvio Schembri said the initiative reflects Malta’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies that improve everyday life while strengthening the country’s position as a digitally advanced nation.MDIA CEO Kenneth Brincat described the project as an example of technology being used to deliver services that are more secure, trustworthy and centred around citizens’ needs. The public call for tenders is open until 3rd September, with interested bidders invited to submit proposals through the government’s electronic procurement system.•
