Wait 5 sec.

Myanmar was shaken near Shwebo, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 only 13 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 18. km beneath the epicenter near Shwebo, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, Myanmar (Burma), in the morning on Friday, July 17th, 2026, at 7:26 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) at magnitude 4.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.8.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Shwebo (pop. 88,900) located 40 km from the epicenter, and Ye-u (pop. 20,500) 55 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.Weak shaking might have been felt in Mogok (pop. 89,900) located 57 km from the epicenter, Kanbalu (pop. 25,000) 61 km away, Madaya (pop. 24,200) 71 km away, Mandalay (pop. 1,208,100) 97 km away, Sagaing (pop. 78,700) 107 km away, Monywa (pop. 182,000) 117 km away, and Monywa (pop. 182,000) 117 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
