Disney World Dismantles Germany Pavilion Experience at EPCOT, Closures Abound

Wait 5 sec.

Construction activity is continuing to spread throughout EPCOT’s Germany Pavilion, and guests are now encountering even more temporary closures as Disney presses ahead with refurbishment work across the World Showcase location.Credit: Steven Miller, FlickrSituated between the Italy and China pavilions, Germany has been welcoming guests since EPCOT opened in 1982. Designed to resemble a traditional German village, the pavilion features cobblestone streets, themed shopping, and dining experiences, including Biergarten Restaurant. Among its best-known retail locations is Stein Haus, where guests can browse German steins, glassware, ornaments, and other souvenirs.Over the past several weeks, construction has become increasingly visible around the pavilion. Rolling planters, construction walls, scrim, and scaffolding first appeared around the Stein Haus entrance before expanding to cover the building’s second-story balcony, decorative staircase, and the iconic “Stein Haus” sign. Despite the exterior work, the shop has remained accessible through alternate entrances, including the nearby Weinkeller doorway, while Disney has yet to announce the scope of the project or any expected completion date.Credit: Matt Wade, FlickrThe refurbishment has also resulted in additional temporary closures elsewhere in the pavilion. Earlier this week, Disney closed both Der Teddybar and Volkskunst without advance notice, with construction walls blocking access to the connected merchandise locations. While Stein Haus has remained open via alternate pathways, the temporary closures have reduced the number of shopping experiences available in Germany as work continues.Guests visiting the pavilion will now find another area unavailable as Disney has closed the Germany Pavilion restrooms for refurbishment, per reports. Guests are directed to nearby restroom facilities while work is underway, marking the latest operational change in the area during the ongoing construction project. The German pavilion experience that many guests expect is clearly dismantled, and visitors will have to accept that the location is not operating at its best at present.Credit: Gary Todd, FlickrThe activity is part of a broader series of refurbishment projects taking place across EPCOT. Although Disney has completed the park’s multi-year transformation that introduced the World Celebration, World Discovery, and World Nature neighborhoods, maintenance and restoration work has continued throughout World Showcase as individual pavilions receive updates intended to preserve their themed environments.Newly amended Orange County permit documents also suggest the Germany Pavilion project is far from over. Disney has updated an existing Notice of Commencement covering general construction at 1750 Avenue of the Stars, an address associated with EPCOT. The amended filing names MSG Legacy, Inc., doing business as RSS Roofing Services and Solutions Florida, as the contractor, and extends the legal notice through January 29, 2027, unless the project is completed sooner or another amendment is filed.Credit: Reinhard Link, FlickrWhile Notices of Commencement rarely specify exactly what work is taking place, they are required before construction can begin or continue in Florida and often indicate that active projects remain underway. The filing does not identify the exact improvements planned for the Germany Pavilion, but its timing aligns with the expanding construction surrounding Stein Haus and the growing number of temporary closures throughout the pavilion.Because the contractor specializes in roofing and exterior building work, the permit appears consistent with the visible refurbishment currently taking place. Disney has not confirmed whether the project extends beyond routine maintenance, and there is no indication that the Germany Pavilion is receiving a large-scale reimagining. For now, the work appears focused on preserving one of EPCOT’s original World Showcase pavilions while keeping as much of the guest experience operational as possible. What is your favorite pavilion in EPCOT’s World Showcase?
