Former minister Chris Cardona has dismissed allegations linking him to an alleged plot to murder journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, insisting the claims are based on “contradictory” and uncorroborated testimony from convicted killers, Times of Malta has reported.Speaking after his name was repeatedly mentioned during Yorgen Fenech’s trial by jury, Cardona said he sees no reason to step down from his recently acquired role as president of Birkirkara FC.“These are second-hand and uncorroborated claims made by convicted killers, some of whom are now contradicting each other and their own earlier sworn testimony,” Cardona said.“I have never been charged with anything in relation to this case and I categorically deny any involvement.”Over recent days, convicted murderers George and Alfred Degiorgio, together with Vince Muscat, known as Il-Koħħu, alleged in court that Cardona was behind an aborted 2015 plot to kill Daphne Caruana Galizia.Cardona was questioned by police in connection with the allegations in 2019 but was released without charge. He reiterated that the testimony heard in court does not affect either his position or his commitment as president of Birkirkara FC.Yorgen Fenech has pleaded not guilty to charges that he masterminded the 2017 assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.•
