The Mosta Rotunda, renowned for surviving one of Malta’s most remarkable World War II incidents, sustained minor damage following last month’s fireworks factory explosion in Naxxar.According to a report by Times of Malta, Parish priest Fr Sebastian Caruana confirmed that two small windows in the church were found shattered on the day of the blast, which occurred on 1st June at a fireworks factory in the Salina area, approximately 3.2 kilometres away. However, Fr Caruana downplayed the extent of the damage, noting that the windows—measuring around 30 square centimetres—may have already been compromised prior to the explosion and would not be costly to replace. The powerful blast was felt across central and northern Malta, killing and injuring livestock, shattering windows and sending flames and thick smoke into the sky.The incident has inevitably drawn comparisons to the Rotunda’s most famous brush with destruction. In April 1942, a 500kg German bomb crashed through the church’s dome while around 300 worshippers were inside. Remarkably, it failed to explode, and nobody was injured.Completed in 1860, the Mosta Rotunda remains home to one of the largest unsupported domes in the world and continues to stand as one of Malta’s most iconic landmarks. What do you make of this?•
