President Trump brushes off Iran’s decision to suspend memorandum of understanding as fighting in the Mideast escalates after killing of two American service members.By World Israel News StaffPresident Donald Trump over the weekend dismissed Iran’s announcement that it has suspended its commitments under a month-old agreement with Washington, offering a blunt response as renewed fighting threatened to bury the diplomatic initiative.Asked during a brief telephone interview with NewsNation on Saturday about Tehran’s decision to stop implementing the memorandum of understanding, Trump replied: “I couldn’t care less.”Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced the suspension after accusing Washington of abandoning its obligations under the agreement.“The US has violated and suspended all its commitments within the framework of the Islamabad MoU,” Gharibabadi said, according to Iranian media. “We have also suspended our commitments. We are not implementing them, and we are busy defending the country.”Iranian state television also broadcast a statement attributed to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei declaring that repeated American violations had demonstrated that Trump’s signature was “worthless and invalid.”Khamenei warned that Iran and the regional groups aligned with Tehran had “unforgettable lessons” in store for the United States if the attacks continued. The US and Iran signed the 14-point memorandum on June 17 in an attempt to halt their widening military confrontation and create a 60-day negotiating period for a more comprehensive settlement. The agreement called for an end to military operations, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the removal of the US naval blockade and negotiations over sanctions, Iran’s nuclear program and its enriched-uranium stockpile. The arrangement began unraveling after renewed attacks on commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz. Washington accused Iran of targeting vessels using a route outside Tehran’s control and responded by resuming airstrikes and restoring its blockade of Iranian ports. Iran, in turn, accused the United States of violating the agreement first.Trump’s comments came as the US military confirmed that two American service members had been killed while US and allied forces defended against Iranian ballistic missiles and drones in Jordan on Friday. Another service member remained missing.Four additional American troops were evacuated to Jordanian hospitals but were later discharged, according to US Central Command. Other personnel treated for minor injuries returned to duty.Trump described the deaths as “a very sad thing” and said the service members had died “in service of our country.” He repeated that the central American objective in the conflict was “never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”The deaths marked the latest American casualties in a conflict increasingly centered on control of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea. Iran has used missiles, drones and threats against commercial shipping in an effort to challenge US military operations and pressure Washington’s regional allies.Mohsen Rezaei, a military adviser to Khamenei, warned that Iran would sharply widen its response if the American campaign continued.“If the US attacks continue for another two or three days, we will enter a phase of full-scale offensive and destructive attacks,” Rezaei told Iranian state television. He said Iran’s previous policy of pursuing “both war and negotiation” had ended, suggesting Tehran could move beyond what it has described as limited retaliation and target American forces more broadly across the region. The US military subsequently announced another wave of strikes against Iran, saying the operation was intended to punish the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for the attack in Jordan and further weaken Tehran’s ability to restrict shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.Iranian media reported strikes near Sirik and Hajiabad in southern Hormozgan Province, as well as explosions around Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island. Earlier attacks reportedly damaged bridges, tunnels, electricity infrastructure and a desalination facility near Iran’s principal Gulf port. The post Trump ‘couldn’t care less’ about Iran suspending agreement with US as fighting escalates appeared first on World Israel News.
