However, the government’s cold response has made its position clear: it will pay no heed to the students’ demand for the resignation of the Union Education Minister. The prolonged silence has only reinforced perceptions of an authoritarian approach.Kamal Laddha,BengaluruI still remember line in my Class 9 NCERT political science textbook: “A democratic government is better because it is a more accountable form of government.” Accountability means that the government should answer the people and listen to their concerns. The gathering at Jantar Mantar was a peaceful protest with one demand. Whether people agree with this demand or not, students have the right to peacefully express their concerns. Paper leaks have made students take a second look at the education system as behind every test are months, and sometimes years, of hard work. Who will be accountable for the stress, disappointment and uncertainty that students face? That said, United States President Donald Trump may yet come to regret his whimsical views on H-1B visas when shown images of Indians in their twenties, thriving under private entrepreneurship and demonstrating high technological excellence.R.
