Couple’s dinner is ruined after Charleston restaurant allegedly prioritizes film crew. Then they look at the food and leave without paying: ‘in my 24 years I’ve never’

Wait 5 sec.

A woman who goes by @hannahhrevels on TikTok shared that she and her husband, along with another couple, had what she described as the worst restaurant experience of their lives during a double date in Isle of Palms, South Carolina. According to Hannah, the evening ended with the entire bill being comped after the group waited nearly three hours for food that arrived cold, incorrect, and already boxed up to go. The TikTok video, in which Hannah does her makeup while recounting the story, has drawn widespread attention online. “In my 24 years I’ve never left a restaurant without paying, and that changed last night,” she said at the start of her video. She described herself and her husband as patient, understanding people who always give restaurants a second chance, and said they had never, in eight years together, vowed never to return to a restaurant before this experience. The group said staff appeared to shift their attention to the film crew shortly after the food order was placed According to Hannah, the group arrived on a Saturday night during what she described as the beginning of tourist season, expecting it to be busy. She said they waited a little over an hour for an outdoor table, which she noted was not the part of the story that bothered her.  @hannahhrevels this was by FAR the craziest experience everrrr!! safe to say we won’t be back #storytime #crazyrestaurant #charlestonsc #isleofpalms #crazystory ♬ original sound – Hannah Revels While waiting, the group reportedly noticed a large professional film crew setting up inside the restaurant, with lighting equipment and multiple cameras. A waitress at the restaurant later confirmed to another table, within earshot of the group, that the crew was filming the Bravo reality series Southern Charm, according to Hannah. Once seated, she said their drinks order came with a minor mix-up. She said she ordered water but received a Coke, though waters were also brought to the table. Appetizers, she said, came out quickly, within five to ten minutes. Hannah said the group then placed their food orders at around 7:45 p.m. Shortly after, their waitress reportedly returned to let them know that entrees might be delayed because the kitchen was backed up. According to Hannah, the group waited another hour and a half for their food after ordering. She said that during this time, the restaurant’s staff appeared to be focused on the filming, and that a manager came over at one point, not to address the delay, but simply to offer refills and mention that the waitress had moved over to assist the production.  One viewer, commenting on the video, wrote, “When the manager came and asked if y’all anything cuz they were taking over…I woulda immediately said ‘my food maybe.'” Hannah replied, “When he came over it wasn’t even that long after ordered or we would’ve HAHAHA.” She said all the other tables around them received their food, paid, and left, while her group sat waiting as the restaurant closed at 9 p.m. Around 9 p.m., the food finally arrived, brought out by a runner who, according to Hannah, called out a flounder sandwich that no one at the table had ordered. She said the waitress quickly stepped in and began boxing the food up without asking the group, telling them it would be packed to go, despite the group having waited roughly three hours and wanting to eat at the table.  When the group received their boxed orders, she said one member of the party did not receive what he had ordered, and she and her husband did not receive the fries they had paid extra for, having substituted the default side of chips. This situation mirrors other disputes where customers cite policy to refuse payment for unsatisfactory meals, like a Florida mother who started a boycott over a refused meal. She said the group told the waitress they did not think they should have to pay for the experience. According to Hannah, the waitress responded by asking, “Do you just want me to comp the bill?” to which the group agreed.  Hannah said a manager was called over to approve the comp. She said the manager never came to the table during the meal, and only approached the group in the parking lot afterward to apologize. “I don’t really know what happened tonight,” she recalled him saying, adding that he acknowledged it was not an excuse.  When her friend suggested the filming may have caused the group to “slip through the cracks,” the manager reportedly agreed. Hannah said she had expected the manager to offer gift cards or a free appetizer for a return visit, but he only apologized and told them to come back. Her friend reportedly responded, “Probably not.” Billing disputes often escalate when customers feel wronged, as with a California diner who tried to cover the bill with a PDF. The group drove home with their boxed meals, which Hannah said were cold and soggy by the time they arrived. She said they did not end up eating the food. She noted that the restaurant was not one she would name publicly, and that her friends, who had visited before, said the experience was not typical of the restaurant.  Some viewers identified the Southern Charm cast members present that evening, as one commenter wrote, “Shep and little Craig. I love Southern Charm! Bad service tho for sure,” to which Hannah replied, “I’m gonna have to start watching it!”  The single-tab situation also drew attention from a commenter who works in the service industry, who noted, “as a server i always drop one check unless they specify they want it separately but i work in an upscale high volume restaurant. multiple checks and payments for one table slows down service so im not going to assume people want separate checks.”
