Gabriel Slonina’s chances to be the No. 1 goalkeeper at English Premier League side Chelsea may be slim but the American could be on his way to Ligue 1 for the upcoming season.Strasbourg are set to give Slonina a trial opportunity during preseason camp, French outlet L’Equipe reported Wednesday. Should Slonina impress Strasbourg manager Hugo Oliveira, he could join the club on loan or in a permanent deal, becoming the latest player to switch from Chelsea in recent seasons. Chelsea originally acquired Slonina from the Chicago Fire in August 2022 before loaning him back to MLS for the remainder of the season as well as most of the 2023 campaign. He’s also spent time on loan with Belgian side Eupen and English club Barnsley, in addition to featuring for Chelsea’s youth sides. The U.S. Men’s National Team shot-stopper remains a top prospect in the American ranks but doesn’t look to be high in Chelsea’s plans with Robert Sanchez continuing as the No. 1. Fellow Chelsea and American teammate Caleb Wiley spent time on loan at Strasbourg from Chelsea during the 2024-25 season and Slonina could be the next. Mamadou Sarr, Ben Chilwell, and Mike Penders are just three of the more recent players to benefit from Chelsea’s multi-club network and play at Strasbourg. Strasbourg opens its Ligue 1 schedule at Marseille on August 21 but first will face Sporting Lisbon and Newcastle United in preseason friendlies.
