The 2026-27 European season is only weeks away from kicking off and several American MLS products remain linked with potential moves abroad this summer. Sebastian Berhalter and Max Arfsten are two of the leading American players garnering interest after recently featuring at the FIFA World Cup for the U.S. Men’s National Team. Berhalter and Arfsten are both options for EFL Championship clubs ahead of the start of the season on August 14. USMNT goalkeeper Matt Freese is also a potential candidate to move abroad after working his way into a consistent No. 1 role for club and country. Attacker Zavier Gozo and midfielder Adri Mehmeti are two of the younger talents receiving plenty of interest after delivering strong club seasons to date. With the European season right around the corner, here is a closer look at five American MLS players that could be on the move abroad by the end of the year:Sebastian BerhalterOne of the USMNT’s positive performers at the FIFA World Cup, Sebastian Berhalter could bid farewell to the Vancouver Whitecaps by season’s end. Berhalter is already receiving interest from the EFL Championship and is well on pace to set new career-highs in multiple categories this year. The 25-year-old’s six goals scored are already a new best while he is only five assists away from tying his season-high from a year ago. Berhalter’s growth into one of the more durable midfielders in MLS has taken his game to new heights. Now, it will be intriguing to see when and where he ends up, if the right offer comes in.Max ArfstenMax Arfsten may have to wait for his chance at the USMNT’s starting left back job, but a starting job abroad shouldn’t be in question. Arfsten remains one of the top fullbacks/wingers that MLS has to offer as he continues through his fourth season with the Columbus Crew. The 25-year-old has recorded four goals and four assists in 15 appearances for the Crew, which has helped earn him an All-Star Game nod. Middlesbrough remains in the hunt for Arfsten this summer ahead of the new league season, which would reunite him with former Crew teammate Aidan Morris. Morris has excelled with Boro since making his move abroad and Arfsten could be the latest to do so, if a bid comes in and is accepted. Zavier GozoZavier Gozo is continuing to raise the bar at Real Salt Lake. Gozo, 19, has surpassed his goal contribution total from a year ago by producing six goals and five assists so far in 2026. The U.S. Youth National Team player remains an option for the senior team heading into the next World Cup cycle and could very well be on the move abroad by season’s end. A dynamic attacker, Gozo already has ample interest overseas, but may have to wait until RSL’s campaign concludes before he can go. Matt FreeseFresh off of his World Cup debut with the USMNT, Matt Freese may be the next American goalkeeper to take his talents abroad. Freese is in the midst of his third full season as NYCFC’s starting goalkeeper, a role that has led to his No. 1 job with the USMNT. The 27-year-old has registered 22 clean sheets for the club since arriving ahead of the 2023 season, with three of those coming this year. Freese fought off veteran Matt Turner for the No. 1 job under Mauricio Pochettino this summer and is likely to remain the mix this fall when USMNT play resumes. It will be interesting to see who comes in for Freese’s services and how quickly he can play abroad.Adri Mehmeti Adri Mehmeti may only be 17-years-old, but he is playing well beyond his years for the New York Red Bulls. Mehmeti has totaled one goal and four assists in 15 appearances under Michael Bradley, thriving in the Red Bulls setup. The versatile midfielder has formed a strong partnership with Julian Hall, who also remains linked with European suitors this summer. Mehmeti may still be fairly new to first-team football and could decide to stay in MLS for another season.
