Government has dispatched a team of officials from the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Water and Environment to investigate water pollution claims in Kyenjojo district. The Minister of State for Industries, David Bahati, said the probe will focus on Kyenjojo Sugar Factory’s waste disposal practices and their effect on River Nyabukoni and the surrounding communities. This followed a concern raised by Lawrence Akugizibwe, the Mwenge North lawmaker, who raised a Matter of National Importance during the 14th July 2026 plenary sitting, where he appealed to Government to come to the rescue of the locals with one farmer reported to have lost 100 birds.“This river runs through three sub-counties of Nyankwanzi, Mabira and Kyamutunzi and it also pours the water into River Rwizi, which also pours the water into Lake Albert, so aquatic life is affected. People’s animals have been affected, there is a farmer who has lost 100 birds because of consuming that water. Because these people don’t have a soak pit to dispose of their waste. So, my prayer is to the Minister of Water and Environment to compel this factory to have their own soak pit within their factory so that our people can be safe and use their water for domestic activities.”In response, Minister Bahati said: “We received this information a few days ago, and we are working with the Ministry of Water and Environment and our staff will be at the factory tomorrow to see how best we can resolve it. So tomorrow, our staff will be at the factory together with the Ministry of Environment to see how best we can sort it out.” The post Kyenjojo Sugar Factory Under Probe For Dumping Waste in River Nyabukoni appeared first on Business Focus.
