The quake had a very shallow depth of 14.1 km (9 mi) and was felt by many near the epicenter. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.Quake Data | Interactive map | Seismograms | User reports | Aftershocks | Earlier quakes here | Quakes in Kyrgyzstan | Quakes in Kazakhstan | Quakes in or near China | Naryn oblast | Issyk-Kul Region | Chuyskaya Oblast'Hint: Click on the image to see different maps of this quake!Moderate magnitude 4.1 earthquake at 14 km depth19 Jul 20:47 UTC: First to report: VolcanoDiscovery after 6 minutes.19 Jul 20:50: Now using data updates from GFZ19 Jul 20:54: Now using data updates from USGSUpdate Sun, 19 Jul 2026, 21:03Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.1 just reported 41 km northwest of Naryn, KyrgyzstanJust 22 minutes ago, a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Naryn, Naryn oblast, Kyrgyzstan. The tremor was recorded early morning on Monday, July 20th, 2026, at 2:41 am local time, at a shallow depth of 14.06 km below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.5, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.5. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Naryn (pop. 41,200) located 41 km from the epicenter, Ak-Dzhar (pop. 5,600) 61 km away, At-Bashi (pop. 14,700) 62 km away, Baetovo (pop. 10,700) 79 km away, Balykchy (pop. 42,900) 92 km away, and Chayek (pop. 3,800) 100 km away.If you were or still are in this area during the quake help others with your feedback and report it here.Download the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app and get one of the fastest seismic alerts online: Android | iOSI didn't feel itI felt this quakeEarthquake detailsDate & timeJul 19, 2026 20:41:06 UTC - Local time at epicenterMonday, Jul 20, 2026, at 02:41 am (GMT +6)Statusconfirmed (manually revised)Magnitude4.09Depth14.1 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude41.7193°N / 75.6884°ENaryn oblast, KyrgyzstanSeismic antipode41.7193°S / 104.312°WQuality44 seismic stationsShaking intensityIV Light shaking near epicenterFelt9 reportsPrimary data sourceUSGS (United States Geological Survey)Weather at epicenter at time of quakeClear Sky 28.6°C (84 F), humidity: 16%, wind: 4 m/s (7 kts) from SEstimated seismic energy released8.9 x 1010 joules (24.8 megawatt hours, equivalent to 21.3 tons of TNT) | equivalent to ONE quake of magnitude 4.1 | about seismic energy22 minutes ago reported feltJul 19, 2026 20:41 GMT / Jul 20, 2026 02:41 am (GMT +6)Lat / Lng: 41.7193 / 75.6884: 40 km NW of Naryn, KyrgyzstanSource: USGSOther sources: RaspberryShake: 4.5 / 10 km, GFZ: 4.5 / 10 km, 1 more...Detail info | Read user reports | You felt it? - Report it!';storedMarkers.push(['quake-23199220',41.71930,75.68840,'22 minutes ago: Mag. 4.1, 40 km NW of Naryn, Kyrgyzstan',html,'quakes-6-24.png',25,25,12,12,125]); function mkRep(id,notFelt){var nFelt=notFelt||false;var src="https://www.volcanoesandearthquakes.com/app/earthquake-report.php?quakeId="+id;if(nFelt==true){src+="&notFelt=true";}window.open(src,"","status=0,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,height=400,width=350");} function locationHashChanged(e){-1!=e.oldURL.indexOf("#popupMap")&&closePopup()} window.onhashchange = locationHashChanged; function comment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=(t.dataset.id,document.getElementById("commentForm"));"none"==a.style.display?(t.appendChild(a),a.style.display="block"):a.style.display="none"}function sendComment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=t.parentNode.dataset.id,n=document.getElementById("commentContent"),p=n.value.trim();if(p){var o="id="+a+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId;o+="&comment="+decodeURIComponent(p),mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",o,function(e){e.responseText;alert("Thank you for submitting your comment!"),t.style.display="none",n.value=""})}}function flagReport(e){var t=e.parentNode.dataset.id;if(confirm("Report this as inappropriate?")){var a="id="+t+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&flagAsInappropriate=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",a,function(t){var a=t.responseText;alert(a),e.style.display="none"})}}function likeReport(e){var t="id="+e.parentNode.dataset.id+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&like=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",t,function(t){t.responseText;e.style.opacity=.5})}]]>[smaller] [bigger]Most recent quakes Top 20 past 24 hrs Quakes in KyrgyzstanNearby placesThe closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Balykchy, a town with 43,000 inhabitants in Kyrgyzstan, in 92 km (57 mi) distance northeast of the epicenter. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt8147–207 km (91–128 mi)186 km (116 mi)II: Very weak shaking2146–201 km (91–125 mi)174 km (108 mi)III: Weak shaking222–31 km (13.8–19.4 mi)27 km (17 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (17 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report!
