Transport Malta carried out more than 52,000 inspections on public buses across 2024 and 2025, yet found just one case of a bus operating beyond its maximum passenger capacity.According to MaltaToday, the figures were published by Transport Minister Chris Bonett in response to a parliamentary question from Nationalist MP Julian Borg.In 2024, Transport Malta conducted 22,118 inspections without recording a single overcrowded bus. In 2025, a further 30,572 inspections resulted in just one overcrowding breach being identified.Between January and May 2026, inspectors carried out another 16,026 inspections, uncovering four additional cases. However, separate figures show that lack of capacity remained one of the most common complaints made by bus users. During 2025, passengers filed 260 complaints relating to overcrowding or insufficient capacity, while complaints about schedules and drivers were even higher. The figures have sparked questions about whether current inspection methods are capturing the day-to-day experience of commuters, particularly during busy periods.Do these figures reflect your experience using Malta’s buses?•
