The dead internet theory is no longer a theory, if you ask me. There are bots everywhere, on all platforms, and they are incessant. You can usually tell a bot from a real person by its cadence in how they type, or how quickly they respond to a post, or on Twitter/X if they have a blue checkmark and are doing both. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s a pretty safe bet. Screenshot by Destructoid According to Moore’s Law is Dead, a tech industry analyst YouTuber, someone has been paying accounts or deploying bots in an effort to defend or legitimize Sony’s decision to end disc-based physical PlayStation games in 2028. In a new video, Moore’s Law is Dead had multiple “case studies” where he dove deep into social media replies on Sony’s social media, trying to find anyone defending Sony. It was difficult, as PlayStation has seemingly pissed off every gamer there is, but he found a few. The accounts he found as examples all exhibited bot behavior, like having AI-generated profile pictures, randomly hyping up different subjects with perfect grammar whereas other posts are messy, or an account that’s six years old but only has posts going back a month. AI bots posting on social media, or accounts being paid to post about certain things, is nothing new. It’s been prominent in politics for a while now, so to see it potentially being used in such a way is unsurprising. But as Sony continues to ignore the issue and deflect criticism, this latest development might be the biggest slap in the face yet. There’s no way to prove who’s behind these bot accounts, but if Sony thinks it can deploy bots to fight public opinion on what’s arguably been the most unpopular tech and gaming industry decision maybe ever, then I think they will need to try a bit harder to sway the tide. The constant bombardment of Sony’s socials by angry gamers has indeed slowed down a bit, but the sentiment is not going anywhere no matter how long they ignore it. And trying to deploy AI in this “war” against gamers who simply want to own their games is a truly disappointing, if not unsurprising and disheartening, development in this latest ridiculous saga of corporation vs. people.0The post Someone’s reportedly been deploying social media bots to defend Sony’s decision to kill physical PlayStation games appeared first on Destructoid.
