A 1970s pavement project at Newark International Airport in New Jersey used coal fly ash, lime, Portland cement and sand to create a stabilised base beneath runways and aircraft areas. A later Federal Highway Administration evaluation found the pavement sections were still performing satisfactorily after more than 20 years, while also noting the risk of cracking and the importance of careful mix design.
