Matt Prior: Choosing His Passion for Horses Over a Career in Law

Wait 5 sec.

Matt Prior's career could have taken a very different path. After university, he had a place waiting for him at the College of Law in London, but some timely advice from his father persuaded him to follow his passion for horses instead. That decision ultimately led him to the helm of Tattersalls, one of the most important institutions in global bloodstock. In the latest installment of our Words to Live By series, Prior talks to Gary King about the people who opened doors for him, the advice that steered him away from law and towards horses, and why young people entering the industry should back themselves.TDN: Outside of family, who has been the most important mentor in your career, and why?Matt Prior: I've been fortunate to have many, but two stand out. Vere Phillipps, a highly skilled horse dealer, introduced me to thoroughbreds and taught me the importance of hard work at the “university of life”.More recently, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony has been hugely influential. Edmond was one of the first people I met when I was looking to move from eventing into bloodstock. Since then, he has given me, like so many others, opportunities, steered me in the right direction, and has always been available to discuss a problem or offer advice.More generally, as a Godolphin Flying Start graduate, I was fortunate to work with some hugely talented and generous people, and was given opportunities and experiences that opened so many doors.TDN: What is the best piece of advice you've ever received, and who gave it to you?MP: After university, I considered following in my parents' footsteps and had a place at the College of Law in London. Before I went, my dad, who rarely interfered, talked me out of it and encouraged me instead to follow my passion for horses. He used the old adage: “Follow your passion and you won't work a day in your life.”TDN: What advice would you give to a young person starting out in the Thoroughbred industry today?MP: Nothing particularly original. Back yourself, work as hard as you can, and surround yourself with the best people and advice available. The post Matt Prior: Choosing His Passion for Horses Over a Career in Law appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
