Only moments into Tuesday's opening session of the OBS October Yearling Sale, a filly by the late sire Girvin (Hip 12) realized a session-topping $190,000 from CJ Thoroughbreds. At the conclusion of the initial session, a total of 129 head brought $3,525,000 for an average of $27,326, which was up from $22,266 in 2025. The median also increased from $15,000 to $20,000 in 2026.The leading consignor on the day was Beth Bayer, who sold 15 head for gross sales of $419,000.Consigned by her breeder Glen Hill Farm, Tuesday's topper is out of the stakes-producing mare Jewish Guilt (Curlin).Girvin, who entered stud at Airdrie in 2019, died suddenly in 2026.“I thought she was an outstanding physical,” explained Marette Farrell, acting agent for CJ Thoroughbreds. “We're also big supporters of Girvin and were very sad for Airdrie that he unfortunately passed away. He was really a stallion on his way up.”The eight-year-old mare is already responsible for stakes winner Unwritten Rule (Justify). The family traces back to GSW Ivanavinalot, the dam of two-time champion Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro).“She is a well bred filly but she is also a very good looking filly,” said Glen Hill's Craig Bernick. “She looks like she'll stand training and hopefully run at two.”Glen Hill purchased Jewish Guilt for $425,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Sale.“It's an old Florida family, that's why we bought into it,” he explained. “It's actually the same family as Songbird if you look hard at the pedigree. It's a really good pedigree, that's why we bought it.”He added, “We had shares in Curlin and we like buying mares by Curlin out of fast pedigrees. We were confident that if you bring good horses they'll find them anywhere. I'm happy with the price by not surprised by it.”During Tuesday's session, Glen Hill sold a pair of yearlings for a gross of $215,000. The operation also sold Hip 87–a filly by Army Mule–for $25,000.One year ago, Glen Hill sold the sale-topping yearling of the two-day auction, a filly by Into Mischief out of SW and MGSP Compelled (War Front) for $275,000. Named Medinah, the filly won first time out at Kentucky Downs last month.“To be honest, we've been buying some foals to race, some colts, and holding onto what we think are some of our best fillies,” said Bernick, explaining the decision to return to the October Sale. “I really felt we had Book 3 and 4 horses, but Keeneland put us across four books, so instead of shipping all the people and the horses up there, we figured we'd sell them here. Historically, this can be a really good sale.”According to Farrell, the timing of the purchase coincided with some well-timed success for CJ Thoroughbreds, who co-owns Revenge of the Sis (Girvin), third in last weekend's GI Frizette Stakes.CJ Thoroughbreds concluded the initial as the leading buyer, courtesy of its session-topping purchase.“CJ Thoroughbreds had room for one more and really wanted to get a filly,” said Farrell. “We all were very lucky last weekend that they had a filly called Revenge of Sis who was third in a Grade I, so I think everything fell into place. I'm delighted to get her.”The top-priced colt of the session was Hip 120, a son of Pappacap who brought $120,000. Out of unraced Quiet Talk (Honor Code), the New York-bred colt is a half to Iowa Oaks second Just Be Quiet (Karakontie {Jpn}).Purchased by Willow Creek Ranch, the Apr. 5 foal was consigned by agent Colin Brennan Bloodstock at Highlander Training Center, the fourth leading seller on Day 1.“This guy was exceptional,” said Brennan. “Just in a league of his own especially compared to the Pappacaps I've seen. He stood out as a man among boys in my opinion. I thought he was one who presented himself well here, he was really well received and obviously it showed with the result.”A total of four horses sold for six-figures during Tuesday's session including Hip 144, a bay filly by Mandaloun who went for $115,000 to trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Stephen Rousseau, and Hip 175, a bay colt by Leinster that sold for $100,000 to Dew Sweepers. The post Girvin Filly Heads Day 1 of OBS October Yearling Sale appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
