Former QPR and Southampton striker Charlie Austin has questioned Roberto De Zerbi’s managerial credentials as Tottenham Hotspur sit at the bottom of the Premier League table after five matches. In the meeting with the Fan Advisory Board a couple of weeks ago, Tottenham CEO Vinai Venkatesham expressed confidence that De Zerbi will turn things around. The Spurs chief said it was always going to take time for the team to gel after big changes in the squad, and insisted he is encouraged by parts of the team’s performances this season. However, that has not stopped the media narrative around the Tottenham boss being under pressure, with some reports even suggesting the Lilywhites are already exploring replacements for De Zerbi.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramTottenham fans told there is no evidence Roberto De Zerbi is the right man for the jobThe topic of Spurs’ poor start to the season and De Zerbi’s struggles was discussed on talkSPORT’s Saturday Session show by presenter Ade Oladipo and former Premier League striker Charlie Austin. Both of them suggested that they simply cannot see the Italian turning this around, given his track record of walking away from clubs relatively soon. Here is what the pair said:Oladipo: “I look at someone like De Zerbi and I just look at a manager that’s quite volatile, quite angry. If it’s not going well… I don’t want to say he walks because he’d rather be pushed, the money he gets if he’s pushed is quite big. I just don’t see how it works, I just don’t see how they turn this around.”Austin: “What, in his managerial record, has he done to think he’s going to turn this around? Spurs fans, do you have the belief in him, because what has he shown at other clubs that he can turn Spurs around, and get them where you think they should be? Because there’s no proof in the pudding.”Oladipo: “Spurs fans, at the start of the season, if you were to say, ‘You’re going to spend nearly £300m’, you want to be fighting for top four, top six. This is a nightmare what’s going on right now, you’re rock-bottom!”Charlie Austin believes Spurs players are not playing for De ZerbiEven though the Tottenham boss brought 10 new players through the door in the summer, Austin suggested that the squad is not playing for him.He contrasted the effort of the Spurs players to Newcastle’s during the Magpies’ 2-0 win at St James’ Park back in August.Austil added: “This is one interesting thing I don’t think has been said – you see those Newcastle players? They’re on their toes, they’re ready, they look like they’re going to go to war, they’re going to run through a brick wall for that manager.“Tell me the players in that Spurs dressing room that are going to run through a brick wall for him. I’m not seeing it, and I think the proof’s in the pudding after these five games.”READ MORE: Watch as Tottenham’s Mathys Tel scores dramatic late winner for France U21sThe post ‘De Zerbi doesn’t have the credentials to turn things around at Tottenham’ – Charlie Austin appeared first on Spurs Web.
