A Maltese police sergeant has successfully reached Mount Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar after an eight-day trek through the Himalayas, while using the challenge to raise funds and awareness for victims of terrorism.Ryan Mifsud Schembri, who has served in the Malta Police Force for 19 years, embarked on the expedition from Lukla before trekking for around eight to ten hours every day.His journey eventually took him to Everest Base Camp, sitting at 5,364 metres above sea level, before he continued upwards to Kala Patthar at approximately 5,600 metres. And he brought a little piece of Malta with him, proudly holding up the Maltese flag against the dramatic Himalayan backdrop. The expedition saw Mifsud Schembri travel through remote mountain settlements and challenging terrain while dealing with increasingly thin air as he climbed higher. But the trek wasn’t simply a personal challenge.Mifsud Schembri used his expedition to raise money and awareness for the Victim Support Europe Terrorism Response Network, which supports people affected by terrorism. His chosen cause also has a connection to his professional life.Having previously served with the Special Intervention Unit and Malta Counter Terrorism Unit, Mifsud Schembri currently works as a specialist at Europol’s European Counter Terrorism Centre in the Netherlands. His Himalayan challenge combined that background in public service with an ambitious test of endurance, taking him to one of the world’s most iconic locations while raising funds for a cause closely connected to his field. Those who still wish to donate to the cause can do so online.Well done Ryan!•
