From dreamland to disbelief: Arsenal’s unforgettable 4-4 draw at Newcastle

Wait 5 sec.

One of Arsenal’s most memorable games in Premier League history was their agonising 4-4 draw away to Newcastle United on Saturday 5th February 2011.It was a crazy game of football which saw Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal go 3-0 up after only ten minutes and 4-0 up by the half-hour mark, before conceding four times afterwards to somehow draw against the Magpies. The game truly lived up to our old tarnished slogan “same old Arsenal”, painfully even when looking back on the occasion.Arsenal race into an incredible four-goal leadInside the first minute, Theo Walcott slammed in the opener in front of a roaring 50,000-plus fans at St James’ Park. Two minutes later, Johan Djourou belted in a header to double Wenger’s side’s advantage emphatically.Within the tenth minute, Robin van Persie brought Steve Harper in the home goal to his knees again with a potent effort to make it 3-0.Inside the 26th minute, “The Flying Dutchman” snatched his second of the afternoon to put Arsenal in dreamland thanks to a wicked header.Come half-time, Arsenal were surely on track to score at least a fifth or even sixth goal and thrash Alan Pardew’s side for good. But what was about to happen has never been repeated since in Premier League history, and certainly not for the betterment of the men in red and white.Newcastle complete an unforgettable comebackIn the second half, it initially looked as if Arsenal were keeping the Magpies at bay, but then Joey Barton scored from the penalty spot after 68 minutes, which didn’t seem to be much of a worry at all. With around a third of the game to go, Newcastle slashed Arsenal’s lead in half after Leon Best beat a young Wojciech Szczesny in goal.Moments later, Arsenal supporters were sent chills down their spines after Barton slotted away a second penalty of the afternoon, with the Gunners suddenly under more pressure than they had been for the rest of the game. Then, with three agonising minutes remaining, Cheick Tiote, who sadly passed away prematurely in 2017 from cardiac arrest, delivered an unstoppable long-range strike which dramatically denied Arsenal the win.To this day, the result marks the greatest Premier League comeback, and against Arsenal, a record Wenger would certainly prefer not to shout about after having previously led the Gunners to their unequalled 49-game unbeaten streak.Arsenal’s Russian attacker Andrey Arshavin told SkySports after the game:“What happened was something unbelievable with a tragic end for us. It was as if there was a magnet behind one of the goals because all eight were scored in it.”Fortunately, this hasn’t happened to Arsenal or us Gooners since!Liam HardingWhere does Newcastle 4-4 Arsenal rank among the craziest Gunners matches you have ever watched? And could you believe what you were seeing when Tiote’s equaliser went in?
