Plant something, and something will grow in you. Research suggests that’s more than a nice saying. In a 2024 study published in People and Nature, Katherine Alaimo and her colleagues interviewed 34 first-season community gardeners in Denver and found that nearly all of them came to care for their plants, felt a sense of pride and accomplishment, and felt closer to nature. The researchers linked those experiences to new connections and closer bonds with other people. The gardening stories below show that care reaching well past the garden bed: kindness, compassion, and empathy between neighbors and strangers, love for a partner, healing for a grieving mother, and a quieter kind of growth in the gardeners themselves. They prove: sometimes the best harvests can’t be eaten.
